I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

It’s been awhile since I last posted a picture of me. Without Layla, without Deon, not in home clothes, not without makeup. Just me, post motherhood, looking stylish, glamorous and unfriendly. Haha!
 
While I must admit that it is nice to have chio photos to showcase on social media, however as I age, more and more so I relish being in the present. And that means, when I am with my daughter I spend quality time with her instead of trying to capture the perfect moment, and be spending quality time with my phone instead. Likewise, when I’m with my friends, at work, with my family, with Deon, having a nice meal, all dressed up for an event or an editorial shoot, when I’m cooking, reading a book, taking my daughter out to park, cycling, working out, etc. I am in that moment with them and myself. It is such a beautiful feeling to be able to be completely engaged in something I am doing, such a privilege to be spending quality time with myself especially after being a mom.
 
It is unfortunate that in this time and age, people often do things for the sake of presenting it to the rest of the world. There’s this weird mentality of, 'if I don’t show then it doesn’t count because people wouldn’t know that I have done it.'
 
I’m proud to say, those days where I needed external validation is over.
 
When I first started Instagram, it was because I wanted to document my life’s journey. I posted my first picture on 10 June 2011, it’s been a decade (OMG)! It’s been through so many stages of my life with me. The good times and the bad, many relationships, heartbreaks, marriage, vacations, wonderful meals, hairstyles, fashion, deaths, births. I am delighted that 10 years later, ive stayed authentic and shared only things that matters to me at that point in my life. it’s like a little journal that I keep. I may not put in much effort with showing ‘Instagram-worthy’ pictures, but I sure do with writing my thoughts.
 
So thank you guys, for being here with me all these years. For accepting my less than perfect photos, my bad grammar, my infrequent posts, my long-windedness, my non-existent replies and comments.

Chắc hẳn các bạn đã đọc nhiều bài chia sẻ về hành trình đạt 8.0 IELTS của nhiều IELTS Achievers, tuy nhiên từ góc nhìn của một người xuất phát là dân tự nhiên, mình mong rằng những chia sẻ dưới đây của mình về hành trình từ 0 tới 6.5 IELTS và từ 6.5 tới 8.0 IELTS sẽ hữu ích cho các bạn, đặc biệt là với các bạn không có nền tảng tiếng Anh bắt đầu chinh phục IELTS 6.5, và các bạn có trình độ tiếng Anh tương đối tốt (đã đạt 6.0-6.5 IELTS) nhưng không phải dân học ngôn ngữ muốn chinh phục IELTS 8.0.

Giới thiệu 1 chút, cấp 2 và cấp 3 mình đều học chuyên Toán (chuyên A0 tổng hợp - THPT chuyên KTTN, Đại học quốc gia Hà Nội), thi đại học khối A (toán, lý, hóa) vào Ngoại thương (chuyên ngành của mình là Kinh tế đối ngoại chứ không phải là ngôn ngữ Anh nhé), nên hoàn toàn là dân tay ngang và trải qua quá trình học IELTS từ cơ bản tới 8.0 IELTS khá là đau đớn :<

Bài chia sẻ hôm nay của mình sẽ về kỹ năng Listening, chia thành 2 giai đoạn từ 0 – 6.5 và từ 6.5 – 8.0. Còn về 3 kỹ năng còn lại Writing, Reading và Speaking mình xin phép được chia sẻ trong các bài tiếp theo. Đồng thời ở cuối bài chia sẻ này, mình mong có thể đưa đến cho các bạn một góc nhìn khác về kỳ thi IELTS, vì theo mình những suy nghĩ sai lệch về kỳ thi này sẽ chính là rào cản làm các bạn chậm lại trên con đường chinh phục nó.

(A) Kỹ năng Listening

(1) Từ 0 tới 6.5 IELTS LISTENING
Đây chính là kỹ năng làm mình từ bỏ IELTS lần I ( hồi lớp 12, khi bắt đầu có ý định học IELTS để đi du học). Hồi đấy mình có đăng ký 1 khóa học ôn thi ở 1 trung tâm ở Hà Nội. Cảm giác mỗi lần bật file nghe lên, thấy các bạn trong lớp làm nhoay nhoáy, trong đầu mình thì “ tôi là ai và đây là đâu. Tập trung. Tập trung nào Liên ơi. Ồ, A đúng, à C đúng, ôi hay là B nhỉ” và thường là hết cả 5-6 câu multiple choice không đúng câu nào và chả hiểu mô tê gì luôn. Nhiều lần, gọi điện cho đứa bạn thân bất lực khóc luôn, tại hồi ấy mơ ước đi du học lắm. Dân tự nhiên bắt đầu học IELTS gian nan thế đấy

Lần thứ 2 quay lại học IELTS là khoảng năm 2017, năm cuối đại học nên mình cần bằng IELTS để xin việc. Làm thế nào để bắt đầu từ gần như không nghe được một chút nào tới 6.5 Listening trong khoảng 2 tháng rưỡi:
Làm bài tập nghe trong sách “Grammar for IELTS – Cambridge”: trong cuốn này, cuối mỗi unit có phần bài tập nghe hoặc đọc mô phỏng đề thi IELTS, nhưng ở cấp độ dễ hơn một chút. Tuy nhiên, mình không chỉ làm 1 lần, check đáp án mà sau đó là bật đi bật lại rất nhiều lần và kết hợp với transcipt để nghe, hiểu từng từ của audio. Sau đó, tranh thủ những lúc như ngồi trên xe bus về quê, trên xe khách đi du lịch, nấu cơm, tắm, mình đều bật đi bật lại, nghe đi nghe lại rất nhiều lần những file đó. Khi nghe đã nhiều lần, mình còn thường nhại lại theo những audio đã nghe hiểu kỹ càng ở trên.

Vừa giải trí mà vẫn học tập hiệu quả: Bên cạnh việc học trong sách thì mình cũng cố gắng tìm 1 bộ phim Mỹ để tranh thủ lúc giải trí cũng có thể học nghe luôn. Các bạn nên chọn bộ phim nào đó mình thật sự thích, vì mình thấy xem phim mà mình không thích thì còn khổ hơn học, chứ nói gì tới giải trí. Hồi đó, mình chọn bộ phim “Những bà nội trợ kiểu Mỹ” vì đây là bộ phim yêu thích khi còn bé, nhưng đã quên nội dung. Có 1 chi tiết khá đặc biệt, vốn là một sự cố nhưng lại giúp ích rất nhiều cho kỹ năng nghe của mình. Bộ phim này free trên phimmoi.com (năm 2017), nhưng mà tới season 4 thì phải, thì film không có sub, nhưng mà do quá yêu thích, mình không dừng lại được, đành xem không sub, nhưng mà do nghe kém nên phải tua đi tua lại mới hiểu. Việc này giúp ích rất nhiều cho nghe hiểu của mình

=> Tóm lại thì mình rút ra 2 kinh nghiệm như thế này:
Rèn luyện nghe hiểu rất quan trọng. Nên nghe đi nghe lại nhiều lần file nghe mà mình đã hiểu rất rõ, nếu đọc theo được kịp tốc độ thì là đã rất hiểu rồi.

Nên chọn được 1 phim bộ hoặc chương trình bằng tiếng Anh thật yêu thích. Vì hồi đấy thích phim quá nên mình rất chăm học, thụ động mà hiệu quả.

(2) Từ 6.5 – 8.5 IELTS LISTENING :
Phương pháp chép chính tả: phương pháp này thật sự rất chán, nhưng mà do mình nhất định quyết tâm phải nâng điểm nghe lên 8-9 và cũng tăng khả năng nghe hiểu lên, nên mình cố gắng duy trì 1 thời gian xem sao, vì thấy nhiều người nói về hiệu quả của nó. Đối với phương pháp này, mình chỉ chép 1 file nghe dài tầm 3-5 phút mỗi lần. Mặc dù khá chán, nhưng mình duy trì vì thấy nó hiệu quả thật sự. Thứ nhất, nó làm mình nhận ra mình nghe kém thật, thứ 2, phát âm sai nhiều thật nên không nghe ra những cụm từ rất quen thuộc, thứ 3 giúp mình tăng khả năng nghe âm cuối và nối âm rất nhiều, cái mà xuất hiện “everywhere” (ví dụ những cụm: first of all, played it safe, as soon as effient as her,… nếu không nghe chép chính tả mình sẽ không nghe ra được).

Nghe để giải trí và nâng cao hiểu biết: mình có yêu thích với các vấn đề môi trường và phát triển bền vững, … và rất muốn mở rộng hiểu biết về các nước khác (như là ISIS ở Trung Đông, Bắc Triều Tiên, Người vô gia cư ở Mỹ, nhà lồng siêu nhỏ ở Hongkong, … mình tìm những clip về những mối quan tâm của mình trên youtube và nghe vừa hữu ích, thú vị mà cũng giúp ích phần nghe rất nhiều. Mình nghe rất nhiều, gần như trong khoảng 3 tuần, tối nào trước khi đi ngủ cũng xem hết video này tới video khác trong khoảng 3-4h.

Có 2 lưu ý khi áp dụng phương pháp nghe để giải trí và kết hợp học tập:
Nhiều bạn thắc mắc nên chọn nguồn nghe nào: câu trả lời rất đơn giản chỉ cần là Anh – Anh hoặc Anh – Mỹ là được, còn nội dung gì cũng được. Các bạn hứng thú là được, vì hứng thú mình sẽ nghe nhiều, nghe nhiều thì mới tăng khả năng nghe lên được.

Nghe không hiểu, đừng buồn, dừng lại, bật sub và tra từ, để chế độ tốc độ 0.75, … cố gắng để hiểu cả clip đó. Vì nếu không hiểu, lần sau mình sẽ không có hứng thú nghe tiếp.

=> Đúc rút lại về học nghe: mình khẳng định nghe – hiểu rất quan trọng, và để tăng khả năng nghe hiểu, cần thực hiện:
- Cần nghe rất nhiều (với các bạn đi từ con số 0 như mình thì nghe bao nhiêu mình không đếm xuể nữa). Tranh thủ nghe mọi lúc mọi nơi nhé!
- Nên nghe đi nghe lại 1 file nghe mình đã hiểu tường minh từng chi tiết
- Nghe 1 lần không hiểu, đừng buồn, nghe tiếp tới khi hiểu thì thôi. Dần dần mọi thứ sẽ tốt lên, nhưng “good things take time”, nên là không thể vội được.
- Nên chọn được nguồn nghe yêu thích, vì như mình nói ở trên cần nghe rất nhiều, nên hãy chọn nguồn yêu thích để nghe vừa vui mà vừa hiệu quả nhé! Mình xin gợi ý một số nguồn như sau:

- Giải trí: Friends (bao hay và không quá khó nghe nhé), The Big Bang Theory (nghe hơi khó cho những người mới bắt đầu), MasterChef, Ninja Warrior, …
- Thông tin hữu ích, thú vị: TED, TED-ed, Vox, the School of Life, Asian Boss, series Explained của Netflix, …

(B.) Những suy nghĩ theo mình là chưa đúng đắn về kỳ thi IELTS
- Học lên 8.0 IELTS không khó: ôi, sai nhé! Thật ra thì cũng không sai, chỉ là với những người đã có nền tảng thì khác, như là dân chuyên ngữ, dân học khối D, … nhưng với những người bắt đầu từ 0 như mình thì đau đớn lắm các bác nhé!
- Học IELTS nhàn: ôi, sai nhé! Bài thi IELTS gồm 4 kỹ năng, giống như có 4 môn tự nhiên toán, lý, hóa, sinh ấy (so sánh vui để các bạn dễ hình dung nha), nên học vất vả và tốn thời gian đấy. Cần dồn nhiều sự tập trung đặc biệt trong quá trình ôn tập.
- Học Listening theo tips: ôi, … cũng có, nhưng mình nghĩ đúng hơn là có kỹ năng, chiến thuật làm bài thì đúng hơn là tips. Nhưng dù có chiến thuật gì đi chăng nữa thì khả năng nghe hiểu sẽ quyết định tới 70% và tăng dần khi aim cao dần.
