Odor from food stagnancy in stomach
“I tend to burp after each meal, it seems to happen more frequently these days, and the burps have an odor. Do I have some kind of stomach disease?”
CheckCheckCin: From Chinese Traditional Medicine’s understanding, gas from the stomach that moves upwards in the body is belching (‘ai qi’). Stomach gas normally travels downwards, if it moves at the opposite direction, this means you are experiencing a disorder that prohibits the gas from propelling downwards. Gas that has a rancid odor is most probably caused by food stagnation.
If we consume food excessively or have irregular meals, the spleen and stomach are unable to process them on time, food particles can stagnate inside in the stomach and cause people to belch, experience tightness and discomfort in the chest, appetite loss, constipation, and produce foul-smelling stools.
When this happens, we need to clear the stagnation. Use rice sprout, malt, and dried citrus peel to make tea; drinking it can help relieve indigestion and bloating. You can also massage the ‘zhong wan’ acupoint, as it can soothe the stomach and strengthen the spleen, relieve bloating and pain in the stomach.
Millet sprout tea with malt and dried citrus peel
Effects: promotes qi and aids digestion, relieves symptoms of indigestion, bloating and discomfort due to poor eating habits
Ingredients: 6g malt, 6g millet sprout, 6g dried citrus peel
Preparation: Rinse all ingredients thoroughly and place into thermos. Rinse with hot water once. Then add in hot water again and steep for 15-20 minutes. You can re-brew until its flavour weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days for two weeks.
Note: This tea is not suitable for ladies who are breastfeeding as malt can decrease breastmilk supply.
Central Venter (Zhong Wan) Point
Location: located in the abdomen, below the ribs in the midpoint between rib cage and belly button, about 6 finger widths above the belly button
Effects: alleviate symptoms of abdominal pain, poor appetite and digestive system pain
Note: Suggest to press 2 hours after meal
✔Herbal Tea Recommendation: Chinese Hawthorn Tea
Ingredients: Water, Hawthorn, Rock Sugar, Oolong Tea
Effects: Aids weight loss and improves fat-burn, regulates qi to enhance blood flow. Suitable for indigestion, dull complexion, skin discoloration and chubbiness.
Note: This tea is sour in taste so it is not suitable for those with acid reflux or prone to abdominal discomfort. It should not be consumed with empty stomach. Due to its ability to activate blood and relieve stasis, it is also not suitable for pregnant ladies

Ways to clear heat when traveling
“Enjoying the sun when traveling is a great thing. But I have slight sun burn coupled with sore throat and hard stool from all the fried food. How can I clear heat while traveling?”
CheckCheckCin: People should take care of their bodies in different places. We often teach all of you the cold and hot nature of food. It will come in handy! For example, if you are in the sun and have a slight fever, no need to rush to find fever medicine. Try to drink young coconut juice or have some watermelon instead. As young coconut and watermelons are cold in nature, can clear summer heat, promote fluid production and relieve thirst to alleviate the discomfort caused by summer heat. Do not think that drinking beer can clear the heat, the effect is just the opposite, as beer is warm in nature and can promote blood circulation which makes the condition worse. At the same time, stop eating fried and oily food. Then you will feel less uncomfortable.
If you have a sore throat and hard stool or even constipation because of the heat, you may wish to pay attention to the fruit selection on the breakfast buffet table. Eat fruits that cold in nature moderately, such as watermelon, melon, dragon fruit, pear, bell fruit and strawberry. Apples and ripe bananas (with small brown spots on the skin) can loosen the bowels to relieve constipation. Or you can drink a cup of light salt water in the morning as the salt can clear heat and cool the blood, and also relieve your sore throat.
If you have heat-related body condition and you know that you will eat more fried food, you can bring our healing tea “Very Hot (Qi)” to be prepared.

Train to the west
Instead of staying at a hostel, I slept on an overnight train on my first night in Uzbekistan. This country doesn't look big on the map, but a train ride from Tashkent to the ancient Silk Road city Khiva still takes 15 hours, and overnight train is the best option to save daytime and hotel expenses.
The train itself is like a world from 50 years ago. The wooden and painted interior look aged. More surprisingly, the hot water barrel in the car was fueled by coal! Most passengers were seniors or children, waiting in the hot and stuffy car for the train to move and bring in breezes. My up-berth neighbor happened to be two Uzbek young men, and one of them spoke decent English. With his help I was able to interact with other people on the train.
What happened afterward was totally unexpected - instead of quickly falling asleep, people started taking food out and share with others. The old lady in the opposite berth took out bread, eggs, cucumbers and tomatoes, and the young men up-berth brought out two boxes full of grilled steak. They also brought hot water from the coal-fueled barrel mentioned earlier to make tea. I shared the bread I bought before broading as well. Suddenly the sleeper car was returned into a feast!
All the conversation was in Uzbek, which I didn't understand, but I tried to listen carefully and see if I can catch some patterns from this unfamiliar language. They occasionally brought me into the conversation with the help of the English speaking young man. They asked me, are you traveling alone? I said yes, and they followed, no translator with you? I answered no. They were amazed.
Afterward they exchanged their passport with me. (It seems like even Uzbek citizens have to travel with their passport in hand.) They were fascinated by the number of countries I've been to, and I stared at an old lady's Uzbek passport, imaging the day when it replaced her Soviet Union passport.
Strangers got along quickly on the train. The two young men then brought out one bottle of vodka - I guess they'd been waiting for a right timing to do that. Although not a alcohol person, I compromised and agreed to take a little. They seemed to understand that, and were kind enough to prepare a full cup of coke on the side, to let me alleviate the spiciness after taking the vodka.
While still striving to learn something from their Uzbek conversation, jet lag in combination with the alcohol made me really sleepy prior to 10pm. They understood that and let me sleep while everyone else was still having fun. The train was very smooth, and its slight movements helped my sleep. I got a wonderful 8-hour uninterrupted sleep on the train!
The feast continued next morning with the leftover from the previous night. The train was still running in an uninhabited desert. What's different during the daytime is, many vendors went back and forth between cars, selling various items from food, clothes, toys to apparels.
This train trip made my time in Uzbekistan (even before getting to any destination) - train here is more than a vehicle or a lodge. It's a good place to build friendships with locals. There are still another 16 overnight train rides on my trip, and I now know what to do: I will always get food before boarding, and make friends with the food.
