翁啟惠院士曾擔任台灣中央研究院院長，目前為生技醫療產業策進會會長，同時也是台灣第一位威爾許化學獎得主，以表彰其在化學研究的重大貢獻，特別是醣科學的革命性發展。美國威爾許基金會是化學領域最負盛名的國際獎項之一，旨在推動和鼓勵能夠造福全人類的基礎化學研究。
翁啟惠院士31歲時到美國麻省理工學院化學所攻讀博士，3年即取得博士學位，2002年更獲選為美國國家科學院院士。恭喜翁啟惠院士再次取得非凡成就！

Dr. Wong, the former President of Academia Sinica and current President of the Institute of Biotechnology and Medicine Industry, is the first person from Taiwan to win the Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry for his breakthrough research on enzyme technology. Awarded by the U.S.-based Welch Foundation, this award is one of the world’s most prestigious honors in the field of chemistry, recognizing significant chemical research contributions that benefit humankind.
Dr. Wong pursued his PhD in the United States at the age of 31, and 23 years later, he was elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2002. Congratulations on another exceptional achievement, Dr. Wong!

Back in the colonial era, British-born dominated Hong Kong’s senior government posts, including the position of administrative officer. Dr. Patrick H. Hase was among the 3,000 people who were dispatched by the U.K. authorities to govern the city in the ’70s. “I arrived on Oct. 2, 1972, so it’s been exactly 48 years since I got here,” says the 73-year-old.
Upon obtaining a PhD in history from Cambridge, Hase moved to Hong Kong to join the colonial government, without expecting to find something worth more than a high salary. “After checking in at the Lee Gardens Hotel at 5 p.m. on my first day here, I visited Jardine’s Crescent with my wife. The place was different back then. It was a wet market packed with different stalls and people, very lively. We had only been married for one month. I told her I wanted to live here. I liked it a lot and felt happy here.”
