Rooftopping vs Drone
Rooftopping became popular not only because of the thrill that it gives people. It also let you to have a different view of the city, angles that you wouldn't normally enjoy.
As more and more people joined to explore rooftops, it seems like part of the management teams have already noticed and started to work out all kinds of solution to stop this.
Then, drone kicked in and made itself even more viral. Mainly because:
1) It's easy to use a drone,
2) and drones capture the city from all impossible angles that mankind could not physically achieve.
It's true that playing around with the drone is really really fun, especially for a guy like me that enjoys watching the modern city view, with all the skyscrapers sticking out from the ground densely. However I still find there is one thing, that drone cannot replace rooftopping, which is the human element in the play.
What I mean is, I always like to include someone standing in the frame of my photos. I'm not trying to make that person risking his/her life, as I always emphasise "know one's limit" before act. But what I want is to strengthen the sense of appearance, giving the message to my audience that "we were there".
It's easy to drive a drone to many areas, even to forbidden and blocked territories. But having yourself to put in that effort, and actually locate the site, explore the way in, AND capture the moment. This is what I really enjoy doing.
Not saying I hate drones. I love them, they added a new element to my photography, and it's fun mastering it. But there is something that nothing could replace in rooftopping.
