I will be heading to Cheung Chau to join the World’s Top 10 Quirky Local festivals named by TIME magazine tomorrow! That is - Cheung Chau Bun festival 長洲太平清醮!

Due to the pandemic, the most exciting parts - Bun Scrambling Competition (搶包山) and parade (Piu Sik 飄色) is cancelled. However, traditional rituals will be held as usual.
Da Jiu (打醮) is a Taoist ritual held in Cheung Chau, a small island in Hong Kong, and every year to ask for peace from Taoist deities. The island was saved from the plague after Da Jiu was performed a 100 years ago.
What is Piu Sik Parade (Floating colour parade)?
The Parade sees young children, dressed in guises of deities or modern celebrities, balanced on piles, which appeared to be floating above the crowds to appease wandering ghosts.
What is Bun Scrambling Competition?
It is a tradition that young men in the village climbed up a giant 60-feet bamboo towers covered with buns and try to grab as many buns - said to bring good luck and health – from the top.
The government banned the event after the tragedy in 1972 - two bun towers fell during the contest. The event resumed in 2005, but only 12 selected people can join the competition.

🌻 Sunflower Movement - 7 Years Later 🌻
To mark this pivotal event in Taiwan’s recent history, we looked up some of the student activists from 2014.
On March 18, 2014, student activists occupied Taiwan’s parliament demanding the withdrawal of a trade pact with China. For the next 24 days, 400 protesters camped inside while 10,000 more surrounded the area. Among them were documentary filmmakers. The result was “Sunflower Occupation" - a 120min documentary featuring 9 activists + their days inside. The film crowdfunded $2.5M NTD in just four days. It was released by October 2014, in just 6 months.

“Sunflower Occupation” was produced by Taipei Documentary Filmmakers’ Union. It screened at multiple film festivals in Taiwan and Hong Kong in 2014 and 2015. Today, we looked up some of the activists featured.
🌻 Fei-fan LIN emerged as a central figure of the Sunflower Movement. He appears throughout our recommended film, “Sunflower Occupation.” He is currently Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party.
🌻 Yi PAN is a new-gen force in Taiwan’s NGO scene. She’s worked on education, anti-death penalty, LGBTQ, New Power Taiwan, and more. She’s currently East Asia officer at the International Federation for Human Rights. She’s featured in the 7th segment of “Sunflower Occupation.”
🌻 Wei-ting CHEN appears in the 1st segment, titled “A Commander Made by Accident.” CHEN became one of faces of the Sunflower Movement in 2014. He’s currently pursuing a degree in foreign policy and international economic law at the The Fletcher School at Tufts University
🌻 Sheng-Yu HSIEH is an activist and social impact entrepreneur. He was also at the 2010 Wild Strawberry Movement and founded Howsfood to coach, empower, and boost small-scale farmers in rural Taiwan. Meet him in segment 8 of the documentary.
🌻 Brian HIOE does not appear in the 2014 documentary, but he was present and on-site from the very first day of the movement. He is now a prominent voice of Taiwan’s pro-democracy advocacy in the English language.
To round up our tribute to this pivotal event in contemporary Taiwan history, we recommend the Daybreak Project, an English-language archive and encyclopedia, which open-source movement g0v calls “The Most Complete Archive of Taiwan’s Sunflower Movement.” It is hosted by HIOE’s New Bloom Magazine.

This video I explain why you should be making Micro Movies as a start up filmmaker. Micro Movies are very short short films of 60 seconds or up to 3-4 minutes, because they are very short, they are easy and fast to produce and an easy way to fill up your portfolio, but also to get enough different kind of images to fill up your showreel with.
Also there are many Micro Movie competitions and festivals you can send them in to, often these micro movie entry are low to no entry fees, making them much easier to join then longer short film competitions which often cost money to enter. Plus if your Micro Movie get chosen to be shown you get some nice exposure by the viewers of the film festival.

Lan Kwai Fong is one of Hong Kong’s most popular nightlife hot spots and home to over 90 restaurants and bars. The atmosphere ranges from stylish wine pairings to raucous jelly shots and the food on offer is as diverse as the clientele.
Thanks to Hong Kong’s dominance in Asian cinema, this centre of late-night revelry is so renowned that its official street sign is more photographed than many of the celebrities who haunt its clubs. Mostly, the area is crowded with people from the surrounding offices of Central, eager to shake off the working day or week. Get in the thick of it with a street side perch, or watch the antics on the road below from one of the upper floors.
Lan Kwai Fong usually hosts carnivals and other celebrations during major festivals, such as Halloween, Christmas and New Year and has its own beer festival.
