THE NINETEENTH WHOLE《Smilin'》
　
自詡為放克、爵士這類黑人音樂愛好者的你，可能手上就缺這一張！
　
遙想四、五十年前的美國汽車大城底特律，除了擁有名聞世界的靈魂樂王國「摩城唱片公司」（Motown Records）之外，還有數家特色唱片廠牌各霸一方，其中Westbound Records可說名聞遐邇。聽過傳奇放克樂團Funkadelic吧？他們全盛時期的專輯《Maggot Brain》、《One Nation Under a Groove》等等就是在Westbound旗下發行。創立者Armen Boladian在當時的底特律音樂圈相當有份量，不過多年後卻成了全世界臭名昭彰的人物，因為他靠著過往使手段拿到的音樂版權到處興訟，光是取樣過Funkadelic的嘻哈製作人大概就有上千名被告，讓大家恨得牙癢癢。
　
在Westbound之外，Armen Boladian還設立了另一家專攻爵士市場的廠牌Eastbound，累積不少難得一見的珍稀單曲。你現在看到的THE NINETEENTH WHOLE，就是當中「叫不出名字卻好聽要命」的代表之一。雖然看似名不見經傳，但這個來自印第安納波利斯的樂團原本是爵士吉他大師Grant Green的伴奏樂手，後來在1972年組團發了這張《Smilin’》專輯，也是他們以此團名推出的唯一一張專輯。三名成員Billy Wooten（鐵琴）、Emanuel Riggins（風琴）、”Mad” Harold Cardwell（鼓）以緊密的默契撐起整張專輯綿密又狂熱的節奏，輔以曾為靈魂樂女王Aretha Franklin等巨星錄製過上千首歌曲的知名吉他手Cornell Dupree挑起獨奏大樑，加上吉他手Billy Johnson、電貝斯手Gordon Edwards助拳，呈現出70年代早期靈魂爵士一派曲風的精髓。
　
收錄在《Smilin’》專輯的五首歌曲皆是長度超過五分鐘的中長篇作品，包括三首明眼人一看即知品味高段的翻玩作：放克標竿Sly Stone的〈You Caught Me Smilin’ Again〉、加州靈魂搖滾樂團的〈Slippin’ Into Darkness〉與家族樂團典範Jackson 5的〈Lookin’ Through The Windows〉。火光四濺的演出幾乎完全鬆動樂迷對於原曲的印象，奔流不息的即興律動更證明THE NINETEENTH WHOLE是個沒有明星頭牌、卻毫無疑問第一流的練家子組合！至於兩首團員自己的創作〈Monkey Hips ’N’ Rice〉、〈Dark Clouds Rising〉雖沒有搶眼主旋律，仍不失風采，粗嘎的吉他刷弦與風琴交互出招，過癮至極。最後，這張專輯乃是由藍調名人堂會員Bob Porter親自製作、爵士樂迷熟到不能再熟的Blue Notes最傳奇的Rudy Van Gelder擔綱錄音，保證聽了就像專輯名稱一樣開心到停不下來！
