状況で変わる「That's OK」のニュアンス
=================================
　
耳にしない日はないぐらい、ネイティブは本当によくこの表現を使います。意味は「大丈夫」ですが、日本語でも「大丈夫」のニュアンスが状況で変わるのと同じように、英語でもシチュエーションによって意味合いが異なることはご存知でしたか？今回は「That’s OK」が持つ２つのニュアンスの違いをご紹介します。

1) That's OK
→「結構です」
--------------------------------------------------
　
まず１つ目は、柔らかく断る場合に使う「結構です」になります。例えば、何かを差し出されたときや、誘われたときなどに使う場合が多く、直訳で考えると分かりやすいでしょう。 「That’s OK」を直訳すると「それはいいです」になりますが、日本語でも「それはいいや」と断る場合がありますよね。「That’s OK」 はこのニュアンスに大変似ています。
　
＜例文＞
　
〜会話例１〜

A: Would you like some more water?
（お水をもう少しいかがですか？）

B: That’s OK.
（いいえ、大丈夫です。）
　
〜会話例２〜

A: Do you want a ride home?
（家まで乗せていこうか？）

B: That’s OK, I want to walk.
（いいよ、今日は歩きたいから。）
　
〜会話例３〜

A: I’m going to the store, should I get you anything?
（買い出しに行くけど、何かいる？）

B: That’s OK. Thanks for asking though.
（大丈夫。でも聞いてくれてありがとう。）

2) That's OK
→「気にしないで」

２つ目は、「気にしないで」になります。軽いミスや間違いをしてしまった相手が謝った後に使うことがもっとも自然です。逆に、重大なミスや大変失礼なことをした相手から謝られた場合に使うと、まだ怒っているように聞こえてしまう恐れがあるので、注意が必要です。
　
＜例文＞
　
〜会話例１〜

A: Oh! Sorry I stepped on your foot!
（足踏んじゃった！ごめんね！）

B: That’s OK.
（大丈夫だよ。）
　
〜会話例２〜

A: Sorry, my daughter ate the last cookie.
（娘が最後のクッキーを食べちゃってごめんね。）

B: That’s OK.
（別にいいよ。）
　
〜会話例３〜

A: Sorry I’m late!
（遅れてごめん！）

B: That’s OK. I just got here too.

I recently took a solo day trip to Maokong Village in Taipei, Taiwan. It was a nice opportunity to step away from the city and to fully immerse myself in the beauty of nature.

My intention for the month of August was deep rest, and as a practice, I've been making it a priority to explore more of this island and to do things that bring me joy. There's so much more to life than just work but because we live in the society that we do, it's easy to get caught up in just trying to survive.
