【API Innovation with a Consumer Mindset】

Love him or hate him, Elon Musk is undeniably one of the biggest names out there in tech. One of my favorite tech blogs, Wait But Why, managed by Tim Urban, got a call in 2015 from Elon Musk and an 8-part series was written describing his projects and personality.
I wanted to highlight the 4th post: "About Elon's secret sauce--the way he thinks" because many founders could learn a thing or two from one of the most interesting innovators in the world. One of the biggest takeaways is that Elon Musk uses a scientific approach to deal with any problem or thought that he has. And if you think about it, as a founder you should constantly be exercising your critical thinking skills to make decisions, coming up with hypotheses and trying to prove or disprove them. Essentially, every product is a theory, and every iteration is a test.
What I want to reiterate is that while no one can be Elon Musk, anyone can develop the skills to think like him. The first time I really took a deep dive into the way he works was in college, where I participated in a case study competition analyzing Tesla. At the time, Tesla couldn't meet demand and the number of customers on the waiting list kept growing. The case study competition wanted us to find solutions to solve this problem. While my team didn't end up winning, we were the only ones who were able to figure out that lithium ion batteries, which are what drives Tesla cars, are sourced from South America and manufactured in Asia before being shipped to the United States. Our solution was to advise Elon Musk to build his own battery factories. A few years after, Elon Musk announced his plans to build his gigafactories in the US.
Working with a strong team to think outside the box showed us a clear direction. With the same mindset that Elon Musk applies, any founder can dream big and also execute on that vision. "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing," -- Albert Einstein.
