[3.2019 - tại New York, Mỹ 🇺🇸 - thành phố của Phim ảnh và Nhạc kịch].
Nhà mình hay xem phim cùng nhau vào tối thứ 7. Ở nhà nhưng các con vẫn học online nhiều môn vào các ngày trong tuần. Các tối khác nếu đã học và làm xong mọi việc các con có thể tự do xem phim của mình trong khung giờ cho phép.
Vừa rồi nhà mình xem Sweet Tooth - Cậu Bé Gạc Nai (mùa 1 - 8 tập). Bộ phim nói về dịch bệnh gây ra bởi virus như bối cảnh hiện nay và câu chuyện về cậu bé nửa Người nửa Nai, tình cảm, kiên nghị và vô cùng đáng yêu. Các con mê du lịch nên xem phim cũng coi như đang được lang ở những cánh rừng bạt ngàn của nước Mỹ.
“Hải tặc” (The Pirates) - phim điện ảnh phiêu lưu, hài hước của Hàn với những màn tung hứng tưng tửng xứ Kim Chi, kỹ xảo đẹp khi miêu tả cuộc săn đuổi và tình yêu mà con người dành cho cá Kình đại dương (cá Voi xanh).
“Matilla” - bộ phim tuyệt hay về cô bé kì lạ yêu sách, bị gia đình kỳ thị và sự thành công từ sự nỗ lực hơn người.
Gần đây nhất, các con cùng ba mẹ xem “Kỳ nghỉ của Mr Bean”, ba mẹ xem lâu lắm rồi nhưng xem lại cùng các con. Nếu muốn chu du miền Nam nước Pháp và cười cho đã thì nhất định phải xem phim này.
Ngoài ra, các bé cũng tự tìm hiểu và biết rất nhiều phim hay, toàn gợi ý cho ba mẹ xem:
“Điều kỳ diệu ở phòng giam số 7” - phim điện ảnh sâu sắc, đoạt nhiều giải thưởng của Hàn.
“Triệu Phú ổ chuột”- phim đoạt Oscar mà cả nhà nên xem.
“Pi”, cuộc đời của cậu bé và chú hổ lênh đênh trên biển.
“Bác sĩ thiên tài” - phim truyền hình về vị bác sĩ mắc bệnh tự kỷ và hành trình tìm chính mình.
…
Các con cũng xem một loạt phim hoạt hình, nhiều phim đã xem các con vẫn xem lại, vì quá hay. Ví dụ: Coco, Ponyo, Ước nguyện Thần Long, Vươn tới Cung Trăng, Ong vàng phiêu lưu ký, Thợ săn yêu tinh..
Các con hay xem phim nói tiếng Anh (không lồng tiếng) để nghe hiểu thêm. Cacao chưa biết đọc phụ đề nhưng tập nghe nên cũng hiểu nhiều nội dung, cái nào chưa hiểu thì con hay nhờ anh chị dịch. Ví dụ: Cùng làm Anh Hùng, Charlie và Nhà máy Sô cô la, Bộ ba kỳ dị, Ohana - Báu vật quý giá nhất, Đội cứu hộ Malibu.. Các con cũng xem phim gia đình của Hàn Quốc, ví dụ: Cola mê “Gia đình là số 1” phiên bản Hàn, vì tụi nhỏ cũng đang học tiếng Hàn. Học ngoại ngữ qua phim ảnh là lựa chọn thú vị.
Ngoài ra thì các con cũng có lúc xem riêng theo sở thích. Tivi cũng chia ra từng mục theo list riêng của từng thành viên, và cũng để giới hạn nội dung mà các con tìm kiếm.🤓
Coca lớn nhất, con hiểu biết nhiều và thường thích các phim sáng tạo nội dung. Ví dụ: Cuộc đua Go - Kart, Sự kiện chính, Hướng dẫn săn quái vật.. Con cũng khá thích văn hoá Manga Nhật Bản, Coca và Cacao cùng mê phim One Piece (Luffy), Naruto..
Cola thích xem phim musical (nhạc kịch), phim về nhảy múa và biểu diễn, con hay chọn các phim của Disney. Trong 3 anh em thì Cola giống bà ngoại nhất, “đạo” phim.😁 Ví dụ: DJ Lọ lem (Cola xem 9 lần 😬), Feel The Beat, Có tận hai Cha, Full Out 2 - You got this, Cô bé trượt ván..
Cacao bé nhất và quật nhất, thường hay chọn các phim “ngầu”, “hung dữ”, như Khủng Long, King Kong.. Ví dụ: Tarzan and Jane, Kong - Vua Khỉ, Hầu Vương.. Con cũng thích phim phiêu lưu về Vũ trụ, Dải ngân hà.. Ví dụ: Những đứa trẻ cuối cùng trên trái đất.
Nhà mình có “nội quy” xem phim. Đã hẹn xem là sẽ ăn cơm sớm, dọn dẹp xong xuôi và buông điện thoại, cùng nhau thưởng thức. Hôm nào bắt đầu muộn thì sẽ chọn phim thời lượng ngắn, để không kết thúc quá muộn. Phim dài tập thì chia lịch ra xem dần chứ không có chuyện bỏ bữa cơm để xem hay xem đến đêm. Thành viên nào đã xem không được “spoil” (tiết lộ nội dung phim). 😎 Cũng như mọi hoạt động khác, xem phim cũng cần có lịch trình và cả nhà hay bỏ phiếu xem tuần này, ngày này sẽ xem phim gì. Có khi thì bé nào ngoan nhất sẽ được chọn phim cho cả nhà.😉🤨☺️

因為一篇文章,受邀對兩位美國大使簡報

前總統府英文演講撰稿人Andrew Yang在華府智庫工作時,因為寫了一篇文章,受邀對兩位大使演講。當時,他只是個22歲大學剛畢業的實習生。文章到底哪裡好?其實他那時也不太理解。
多年後的今天,他把文章的最初稿貼出來,分析他覺得為何會得到美國政策圈的專注:

📌 這是我在華府戰略暨國際研究中心 (CSIS) 任職的時候,收到的一封 email。寄件人我早已經久仰大名,曾任美國駐中國大使。他跟另一位前大使正要前往中國,希望出發前邀請我到紐約跟他們簡報。
但我收到那封信,非常困惑。因為那時的我,才22歲。我剛大學畢業不久,在智庫也還只是個實習生。兩位德高望重的大使,為何會想要把我飛到紐約去跟他們簡報?

他們 email 裡說是因為看到我寫的文章:“PacNet piece”。
那是我生平第一次寫政策分析評論,是某個週末心血來潮寫的。寫完之後發給我老闆 (也是一位知名的中國專家),他居然直接打我手機 (never happened before) 然後問:「這是你寫的?真的是你自己寫的?沒有其他人幫你?是你寫的?」
我跟他保證我沒有抄襲之後,他就把我的文做了一些修改,然後刊登到CSIS旗下太平洋論壇 (Pacific Forum) 的刊物 PacNet。隔週,華府的兩岸政策專家居然開始討論這篇文,然後文章又被其他國際媒體轉載。
然後我就接到這兩位大使的邀約。我一路都很困惑。

📌 文章… 到底好在哪裡?
老實說… 我那時真的不知道。在文章刊登前,我就只是會議室角落的那個實習生,默默地聽那些地位崇高的專家演講。刊登後,聽到那些專家討論我寫的東西 (但不知道是角落的這個小孩寫的),我還是不知道到底戳到了什麼點。
後來我就遺忘了它。17年之後的今天 (哎呀,透露自己年紀了) 回去看,我才看出一點點頭緒。 有三個點,值得跟各位分享,希望對你的英文寫作有幫助。最重要的點,我放在最後,所以你也可以直接跳到後面看。
一點背景:這篇文章的主題是台灣跟美國政府的溝通。2004年寫的時候,陳水扁面臨選舉壓力,推公投,讓美國很不爽。台灣官方很多團來美國跟 CSIS 等智庫見面 (畢竟不能直接見美國政府),但溝通效果不佳。我這篇文章就是討論溝通為何沒有成果。

📌 1. 寫的很假掰,有時也有用處
我回去看的第一個感想就是:我的媽呀,怎麼這麼假掰!?用一大堆很長的字跟句子,既班門弄斧,又超級難唸…
你看看這段:
Yet officials and experts from Taiwan have been unwilling to tread into the domestic political dimensions of the referendum, and instead steadfastly insist that it is necessitated by international conditions.
這是什麼鬼東西?
“tread into the domestic political dimensions of the referendum”? “Necessitated by international conditions”?
“Steadfastly insist”? 反正就是把一堆音節很多的字,串成很多很長的句子就對了。
所以,寫的不好對不對?其實也不一定。評估文筆的好壞,沒有一定的標準,就看你的讀者喜歡哪種口吻。
Is your writing good or bad? It’s your readers who decide.
那個時候的我,是一位22歲的實習生,面對的是美國政策圈的專家們,其中很多是研究所的教授,用字遣詞都很「知識份子」(不像我公司今天的客戶,都是只說接地氣白話文的創業家)。所以:
•我沒有寫 “low point”,而是寫 “nadir”
•不是寫 “toned down enough”,而是 “sufficiently moderated”
•不寫 “fits with”,而是 “accords with”
我看了都很想打我自己。可是… 就因為我的用字像一位政策分析 (或學術) 的人會寫的,才會讓對方覺得「這個是自己人」。反而是我的老闆會精神錯亂,因為這文筆跟他辦公室外面的那個小毛頭,反差太大。
所以有時候,用很複雜的專業字眼,是一種「建立可信度」的方式。反而在你變成你的領域的佼佼者之後,就可以大剌剌的用白話文,因為沒有人會質疑你的可信度。

📌 2. 專業之餘,還是要玩點文字遊戲
專業歸專業,偶爾還是要來點文字遊戲,讓讀者「喔」一下,不然一直用 “policy speak” (政策的語言,無聊但是精準),沒人想要看下去。
這裡就是一段「文字遊戲」:
Taiwan believes that yelling is the only recourse when its hands are tied, and that the referendum is a rather loud amplifier.
我還記得當時這樣寫的目的,就是要給讀者畫面:把台灣想成一個人,雙手被綁住,就只能大叫,公投就被我比喻成擴音器。
下一段,我就繼續用「樂器」的比喻:
But the way Taiwan has been voicing its opinions is flawed, and repeatedly beating this broken old drum for weeks to American ears has clearly proved counterproductive.
我還記得一位同事看到這段的時候,抬頭對我說:「我還不知道你滿會寫的耶」。這就是我要看到的效果。*不過為何要從「擴音器」變成「鼓」?我也不知道。
總之,在你的文中撒一些好玩的效果,有助於讓讀者繼續看。

📌 3. 但遠比文筆還重要的,是寫到人家心坎裡
即使我的文筆再好,它還是不是關鍵。畢竟華府每天有那麼多文章刊出,很多人文筆比我還要好,為何是我的這篇得到關注?
我現在回去分析,認為是我有「寫到美國人讀者的心坎裡」。
要了解這個點,必須回溯一下背景。我那時是實習生嘛 (不過文章刊登時突然被晉升為研究助理),工作就是安排大大小小的會議,其中很多是台灣的官員跟專家帶團來美國,幾乎都會來 CSIS 因為是主要智庫之一。
在一次次的會議中,我看台灣方很用力的解釋,但美方卻越來越不耐煩。然後下一個訪團光臨,也說同樣的話,然後美方就更不耐煩。我恍然大悟,看到問題在哪裡,才會「心血來潮」的寫了這篇文。
因為我每天都跟美方的政策專家混在一起,很自然的就用「他們的話」把事情寫出來,而且還把他們的情緒寫進去:
Most folks in Washington… believe that the referendum is first and foremost an election gambit.
…true allies do not undermine each other’s interests for immediate political gains. That Taipei fails to see this is mind boggling, and simply infuriates the Americans.
No more one-sided complaints about Beijing or its cozy relations with America in front of U.S. officials who still feel betrayed and want apologies.
很多屬於情緒的字眼對不對:mind boggling, infuriating, feel betrayed, want apologies, etc.
這些話,都是他們身處外交場合,擺在心裡但說不出來的話。突然有人如此直白的寫出來,也等於是為他們宣洩了一些情緒。
這提醒了我一件事:溝通時,把對方的情緒表達出來,有時比任何精闢理性的論點都要強大。

《我的幸福5/2 週末》

*新書分享會後我將直奔高雄衛武營,參加劉孟捷(李斯特巡禮之年)鋼琴獨奏會。這是劉孟捷回台,最重要的一場音樂會,我目睹他用盡了一切心力。過去即使21歲時在費城代打缺席大師的音樂會,劉孟捷都未曾如此緊張。他此次回台,手術前為了沒有遺憾,共舉行三場音樂會:其中4/17與5/30皆是與國家交響樂團NSO合作:530那一場指揮是呂紹嘉。但他告訴我,某些曲目對他而言,是Piece of Cake :惟獨衞武營這一場,曲目由他自己決定,現場錄影,並且找了金曲獎錄音師同步錄音。

劉夢捷明白他即將面對一個大手術,手術風險之外,他的免疫系統疾病,將使他的康復之路更長。
沒有人可以預知未來,為了圓他的夢,醫院每天都要求他早上、晚上量血壓,報告直接傳給院長。振興醫院院長魏崢雖然是亞洲第一把心臟外科醫師,但也不敢大意。
畢竟這個人的生命那麼脆弱,他的心臟主動脈剝離,那是實質的「心碎」了:但他仍有詩,仍有音樂夢。在生命的交接處,在白日與黑夜的交义口,劉孟捷想為他的音樂生涯,留下最美好的紀錄。
他選擇了李斯特。
在這場音樂會前,他甚至以英文寫下了自己與音樂、疾病的半生回顧:如李斯特的巡禮,有仰望,有沉思,有失落,有幽微的疼痛。他以詩篇般的演奏模式,傾訴,詠嘆。他曾得到天賦,也走過死蔭的幽谷。命運是一層又一層的黑影逼近,老天爺隨時想帶走他。
而他已不再流淚,不再沉浸於悲愴告別:因為對他而言活著並不容易,他要讓自己更深刻的抓住每一分時光之美。
如果時間和空間,正如哲人們所形容的
都是不實際存在的東西:那從不感到衰敗的太陽,也不會比我們了不起多少!
他如艾略特的詩句中所形容的:我們為什麼要如此貪心總在祈禱,想活上整整一個世紀?
蝴蝶雖僅活了一天,已經歷了永恆。
當他的身軀如露水還在藤蔓顫抖時,他送給我們一場「完全浪漫又超技的李斯特」。
等音樂會結束了,至少有一張CD,一段YouTube 影像:不論孟捷代表生命的那朵鮮花是否枯萎,他彈奏如天使的音聲不會飛離,它會停留在那夜,繼續釋放芬芳。
這是盡生命之力、之情獨奏的音樂會。劉孟捷説:這樣當他走進手術室時,會少一點悲傷。
或許快樂的日子本來就不多,但讓這場「完全李斯特.完全劉孟捷」的獨奏會放出神聖的光彩吧!
我必將赴會,不會錯過!我知道此刻的獨奏會,很難複製,因為它綜合了太多的情感、愛念,釋放與生命的抒情。
*劉孟捷為此次獨奏會寫下的文字:This past year has seen some unprecedented changes in the world. Many lives have been lost and many have changed. The world has changed while many of us confront the uncertainty of the future.
For most musicians, life has changed. For months, we have been conducting our lessons online, and concerts have mostly stopped or become an online experience as well. More time has been spent learning how to improve the online teaching experience than one could have imagined. While I have felt the duty to continue teaching, the format the pandemic requires for teaching leaves me unwilling to spend more time than I have to.
And truly, I have had other things to deal with. When the pandemic started to worry the American public in March, I was in the middle of a tour with the String Quartet-in-Residence at Curtis, the Vera Quartet. However, our concerts were canceled, and everything came to a sudden halt.
I felt the universe had sent me an unexpected gift, as I had also just received some terrible news concerning my worsening aortic arches and a diagnosis of kidney cancer. The sudden halt in my professional schedule seemed perfect in its timing. I was able to settle into a monastic existence, to simply practice and attempt to heal.
I see many musicians itching to be concertizing again, and many stepped into new territory, performing on the internet. Many took time to develop new podcasts, and to write new materials for their art. Sadly, many have struggled as they have fallen into desperation without any concert incomes. Altogether the music industry seems to be in peril, and many worry about how music and musicians will survive.
However, I had my own survival to think about. Having been through many difficult experiences in my life, I knew this might be the most difficult I would encounter. My Doctors describe me as a walking time bomb. My condition could be lethal at any moment if my blood pressure gets out of control. So while others wrestle with the fate of the music industry, I’ve needed to face my own fate and mortality.
Playing concerts can mean many things to people. At different times throughout my life, I’ve felt the need to express different aspects of myself. When I was young, I wanted to embody the spirit of romanticism, playing lots of Chopin and Schumann. Then there was a period of time when I wanted to challenge myself by showing off pyrotechnics. I had a brooding period where I turned to the pathos of Rachmaninoff, and then felt the need to return to the purity of Schubert and nobility of Brahms. Throughout this pandemic, I wanted to play Bach. Through Bach’s music I found a kind of spiritual sanctuary.
In considering the program for this concert, I felt again the urge to play music that reflects my current feelings and state of mind. The title of today’s recital, “Years of Pilgrimage” seems to fit exactly what I am experiencing.
Liszt wrote several volumes of “Années de pèlerinage” throughout his life to reflect on thoughts he had during his travels. He links his philosophical thoughts to the scenery which inspired them. “Au Bord d’un Source” describes feelings of rejuvenation while standing next to a clear stream of water, a symbol and source of life and energy. It seems to say, when the stream is so pure, life can be so full of joy.
In the Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este (The Fountains of the Villa d'Este), the water has a magical and supernatural quality, as Liszt himself wrote in the inscription: "But the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life,"( from the Gospel of John.)
For me, I have never felt more connected to Liszt than when he looked upon the valley of Obermann and questioned the meaning of existence. At this moment in my life, I often find myself reflecting my experiences of what I see and read into philosophical musings. Perhaps many people come to a time when this is so.
In all this I have felt gratitude for the love stories and sonnets that one can romantically indulge in, and for storms so violent that they threaten to destroy one’s spirit, even the hell-bound journey which brings up questions about the purpose of life…
On this journey, I felt full and alive as a human being. Looking back on this journey, I am grateful for everything, whether happy or sad, to have made an impact, found and imparted meaning to this life.
The unusual time of this pandemic has marked a milestone for me. I have journeyed back home, and as it happened, this is the first time I have spent so much time in my hometown Kaohsiung in over 35 years. It’s particularly nostalgic to play these pieces as some of them were significant in my early musical career. Vallée d’Obermann was the piece I played in my first competition at the junior high school level, in which I won first prize on the national level, which allowed me to be qualified to apply for a special permission to study abroad. This meant my dream to be educated as a musician could be continued in an environment where I could develop fully. In the following year when I was 13, I won the first Asia-Pacific Youth PIano Competition with the Dante Sonata. The competition catapulted me into national attention as I was headlined in several newspapers, and especially since it was held in Kaohsiung, I became a local hero as well. During the same event, I had a fateful meeting with one of the important influences in my life, Mr. Gary Graffman, who then mentored me throughout not only the years when I was studying at Curtis, but throughout my illness and recovery as a pianist. Right before I departed to study in Philadelphia, I played my first solo recital throughout Taiwan, and along with the Dante Sonata, I also performed the three sonnets.
It’s perfect that now, back in Kaohsiung, all these memories have flooded back into my head. I feel so lucky to have been born here, and to have met my first teacher, Chin-Li Lee, who inspired me on the path to become a musician. Prof. Alexander Sung filled me with dreams of becoming an artist. I am grateful for his belief in my talent, when he chose to give a 12 year old such philosophical pieces to play.
Having once again spent some months in Kaohsiung, I can freshly appreciate the source of inspiration it once was for me. I have returned to the source to heal. Having already glimpsed hell’s gate several times, battered and weathered by the storms of life, I know there is a reason life is this way, and it all will be alright.

*劉孟捷衛武營《李斯特巡禮之年》演奏會中,包括李斯特以佩脫拉克三首情詩譜寫的鋼琴琴詩:這三首情詩是從大詩人佩脫拉克一百多首情詩挑出來的,詩本身就很優美,依此激發李斯特的浪漫主義創作靈感,成為琴藝上最困難演奏,但也特別細膩溫柔的琴詩。
這三首分別是:
〈佩脫拉克第47號十四行詩〉〈佩脫拉克第104號十四行詩〉及〈佩脫拉克第123號十四行詩〉。

李斯特於1846年先出版藝術歌曲《三首佩脫拉克十四行詩》(Tre sonetti del Petrarca),再改成鋼琴獨奏版。

J: I only made the cake so Sarah would have to stand around for an hour in the kitchen...
I am a very lazy papa???
S: Damon's cake was very tasty too (I did supervise Mr Chan?)
It's a super simple recipe, pls have a go!

2 Large ripe bananas
1 cup of all purpose flour
2 tbs cornstarch
1 tsp baking soda
1 tbs baking powder
2 tbs yoghurt
40g butter
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
2 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
----------------------
1) Beat the Egg and Sugar until slightly foamy
2) Put all other wet ingredients to the egg and sugar in one bowl - mix together
3) Put dry ingredients in another - mix together
4) Mix wet and dry ingredients together.
5) Oil the baking tin
6) Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius
7) Bake for 45-50mins at 180 degrees
