PART 04 - Traveling around the… table - marvelous exotic food in Tainan
Everybody knows Tainan is famous for unlimited number of snacks, night markets and traditional, special Tainan foods. But, what if somehow you want to take a break from that and want to try something truly exotic? Do you need to go to the airport and fly to another country? Well, that’s an option. But, don’t worry - there’s no need to look for your passport if you’re already in Tainan. Why? Because there are lots of mouth-watering dishes waiting for you right here in Tainan. Together we can explore a few of them. So are you ready?
Option number one: How about some Indian food?
瑪哈印度餐廳Maharaja Indian Restaurant
From time to time I crave some Indian food, and Maharaja is a good option. They have decorations that transports you to an Indian Palace, they play Bollywood music videos in the background and they have a solid menu - from Indian curries, kebabs, naan (Indian bread you can soak in sauces) and also typical drinks (mango lassi, Indian spiced teas. They also have starters, for example samosas - Indian fried dumplings. The food is really good, I got my favorite dishes including: palak paneer - spinach and cottage cheese sauce, chicken tikka masala, yellow masala lamb curry, chicken kebabs and more. All these delicious dishes were nicely washed with a mango lassi - Indian style of yogurt. Gotta admit - I loved it.
Option number two: Are you craving for some good Japanese food? Great - I have an excellent place just for you.

Roasted beef steak, Pork fillet, Japanese bbq beef, cheese donburi, Japanese fried chicken (the difference between Taiwanese and Japanese style is that the one from Japan is juicier, Taiwanese style is usually crispier). You can also find hot pots and other dishes at 1.2KG. I love all the dishes - especially the steak.. I am usually a bit sceptical before ordering cheese in restaurants in Taiwan, but the bbq cheese donburi was truly delicious - hands down.
Apart from the tasty dishes, the interior of the restaurant is really stylish and the ambiance is great. You can really feel that the owner put lots of effort into it. You can take lots of great shots if you bring your camera along. The decoration is a bit of a fusion between Japanese and European styles. It feels really good :)
Option number three: Would you like to try the most famous south east asian cuisine here in Tainan? Let’s go Thai then!
泰味食足A Taste of Thailand
The place is well decorated and a cute elephant statue welcomes you from the street. I am always happy to eat some Thai food, and this restaurant made me happy as well.
Usually when I go to Thai restaurants I order my favorite meals: stir-fried spicy minced beef, shrimp pancake and green curry. They also have quite a selection of seafood dishes, steamed fish and steamed shrimps. I started with green papaya salad - it’s a healthy crispy dish full of veggies and unripe papaya. Yummy! Apart from that I tried the rest and I must say all were really good - but the spicy minced beef remains my favorite. If you are in Shanhua this restaurant is definitely a place to visit!
How about some dessert?
光芒果子.小旅行 義式冰淇淋Sunny Mango Gelato
Yujing district of Tainan is mostly famous for its mangoes. But there is way more to discover in that area. Apart from the gorgeous views you can also visit Yujing Old Street. One of the highlights of that place is a real gelato shop.
What is gelato? It’s Italian word that means “frozen” but most commonly it’s known as Italian ice cream. The difference between gelato and ice cream is very subtle - basically gelato is more icy and thick, ice cream is more creamy and soft. There is quite a selection of flavors - from classic ones (fruit, chocolate) to very special flavors (Sun Moon Lake tea, Taiwan beer flavor). Also, I believe the flavors change from time to time, so each time you come you can get some surprises. My favorite gelato was passion fruit, mango and sesame. But let’s be honest - everybody likes a different flavor, so the only way to find out which is your favorite is…. going to Sunny Mango Gelato!

明太クリームうどん
1人分
材料:
サラダチキン 1/2個
じゃがいも 1個
しめじ 1/2袋
冷凍うどん 1袋
クレソン 1/2束
■明太クリームスープ
生クリーム 200ml
水 200ml
固形コンソメ 1個
にんにく(みじん切り)1/2片
オリーブオイル 大さじ1
辛子明太子(ほぐす)50g
ピザ用チーズ 50g
黒コショウ 少々
作り方:
1. じゃがいもは皮をむき、1cm角に切って水にさらす。しめじは石突きをとってほぐす。サラダチキンは食べやすい大きさに手でさく。クレソンは4cm幅のざく切りにする。
2. 一人用の鍋にオリーブオイルとにんにくを入れて弱火で炒め、香りが立ったらじゃがいもとしめじを加えてさっと炒めて、水と固形コンソメを加えて蓋を閉め、中火で5分煮る。
3. じゃがいもがやわらかくなったら生クリーム、辛子明太子、ピザ用チーズを加えてよく混ぜる。袋の時間通りに解凍した冷凍うどんを加えて蓋を閉め、1~2分煮る。
4. チーズが溶けてスープにとろみがついたら、サラダチキンとクレソンをトッピングする。ブラックペッパーをたっぷりかけたら、完成!

Udon with mentai-cream sauce
Servings: 1
INGREDIENTS
1/2 steamed chicken
1 potato
1/2 pack shimeji mushroom
1 pack frozen udon
1/2 bunch watercress
◾️Mental-cream sauce
200ml heavy cream
200ml water
1 consommé cube
1/2 garlic clove (minced)
1 tablespoon olive oil
50g spicy mentaiko
50g shredded cheese
Some black pepper
PREPARATION
1. Peel potato skin and dice the potato into 1cm pieces. Put them in the water. Remove the root from shimeji mushroom and break apart. Sheered salad chicken. Cut watercress into 4cm pieces.
2. Heat olive oil and garlic in a small hot pot pan. Add diced potatoes and shimeji mushroom then stir. Add water and consommé cube and simmer wit a lid on for 5 minutes over medium heat.
3. When potatoes are cooked, add heavy cream, spicy mentaiko, and shredded cheese, then stir well. Defrost udon as instructed on the packaging, add into the pan. Simmer with a lid on for a few minutes.
4. When cheese are melted and the soup is thick, put chicken and watercress on top. Season with as much black pepper as you like.
5. Enjoy!

Tom Yum Fried Chicken by Jimmy’s Table
I love making fried chicken. I love eating fried chicken. I was craving fried chicken while making Thai food and thought, "why not make a Thai style fried chicken?" Rachel and I loved eating fried chicken off the streets of Bangkok, so I decided to give it a shot. This was my first attempt and it was a success, as I stuck to the basics of marinating and deep frying. For this recipe, I marinated the chicken in Tom Yum paste to give it that sweet, sour and spicy flavor. It worked perfectly as the meat absorbed all the flavors and the crispy skin and batter on the outside gave it the tasty deep fried crunch. I hope you enjoy this recipe!
Ingredients 食材:
Marinade ingredients:
Tom Yum Paste (sold in a jar at City Super) (冬蔭功醬)
1 cup of hot water (熱水)
Main ingredient:
Chicken drumsticks and thighs(雞腿肉)
Deep frying ingredients:
3 cups of white flour (麵粉)
3 tablespoons of garlic powder (蒜粉)
1 tablespoon of ground black pepper (黑胡椒)
1 tablespoon of Cayenne powder or chili powder (辣椒粉)
2 tablespoons of onion powder (洋蔥粉)
1 tablespoon of white pepper (白胡椒)
3 teaspoons of salt (鹽巴)
1 cup of milk (牛奶)
1 tablespoon of white vinegar (白醋)
Peanut oil for deep frying (花生油)
Finishing Ingredients:
Thai Sauce Ingredients (食材):

1/4 cup Fish Sauce (魚露)
1/4 cup Vinegar (白醋)
1/4 cup Sugar (糖)
1/4 cup Garlic (大蒜) - minced
2 Spicy Red Chilis (小辣椒) - minced
3 Limes (檸檬) - halved and squeezed for juice, seeds removed
Toppings:
1/4 cup deep fried shallots (炸紅蔥頭)
1/4 cup deep fried garlic (炸大蒜)
STEP 1
Make marinade. Add in 4-5 tablespoons of Tom Yum Paste into a bowl. Because the paste is thick, slowly add in boiling hot water to dissolve the paste into a thicker fluid. If you add too much, it will get too watery and reduce the flavor of the paste. Stir until even.

If you want to make it for the same day, then marinade it for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour and leave it on the table in room temperature to try to absorb as much flavor as possible.

Make the deep frying mix by adding about 3 cups of flour into a large mixing bowl. Stir evenly.

Now we are ready to deep fry. Start by heating a pot of peanut oil. Peanut oil has a higher heat and smoke point, and it tastes great and is healthier than many other oils.

[TIP] Not mentioned in the video, but a good tip to fry the chicken faster and more evenly, is to take a chopstick and poke 15-20 times into the chicken meat before you soak it into the milk vinegar.
STEP 8
Add and coat the marinaded chicken into the milk vinegar mix. Then remove and place the chicken into the deep fry flour mix. Coat generously and evenly so the entire chicken is covered in the flour mix.

Carefully add the chicken into the hot oil. Be careful as the oil can pop and burn you. Lower the heat so that you can slowly fry the chicken without burning the outside. If your pot is big enough, you can deep fry more than one drumstick at a time.

STEP 10
Deep fry for about 10 minutes and then measure the meat temperature. If the chicken is over 80 degrees Celcius, then remove and rest on some paper towels to absorb the oils. If you don’t have a thermometer, use a chopstick and stick it in the thickest part of the meat. If the chopstick goes in and out easily, then it is ready.
