Actor and martial-arts expert Bruce Lee dies at age 32
On July 20, 1973, the actor and martial-arts expert Bruce Lee dies in Hong Kong at age 32 from a brain edema possibly caused by a reaction to a prescription painkiller. During Lee’s all-too-brief career, he became a movie star in Asia and, posthumously, in America.
Jun Fan (Bruce) Lee was born on November 27, 1940, in San Francisco, California. At the time, his father, a Chinese opera star, was on tour in the United States. The family moved back to Hong Kong in 1941. Growing up, Lee was a child actor who appeared in some 20 Chinese films; he also studied dancing and trained in the Wing Chun style of gung fu (also known as “kung fu”). In 1959, Lee returned to America, where he eventually attended the University of Washington and opened a martial-arts school in Seattle. In 1964, Lee married Linda Emery, who in 1965 gave birth to Brandon Lee, the first of the couple’s two children. In 1966, the Lees moved to Los Angeles and Bruce appeared on the television program The Green Hornet (1966-1967), playing the Hornet’s acrobatic sidekick Kato. Lee also appeared in karate tournaments around the United States and continued to teach martial arts to private clients including the actor Steve McQueen. One of his his powerful quote mentioned: I am not in this world to live up to your expectations and you are not in this world to live up to mine!

前港大理學院院長郭新教授以及幾位香港學者接受《科學》期刊訪問。
“We don’t know exactly how the law will be implemented, but just the perception and uncertainty that it creates will be a problem for the universities,” says Sun Kwok, a Hong Kong–born astronomer who was dean of science at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for 10 years.
“We will have a hard time convincing future recruits that they will have complete academic freedom to teach and do research,” says Kwok, who is now at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, in Canada. “In the last 15 years, Hong Kong universities have made huge progress and are increasingly recognized as major centers of excellence in Asia. Can we maintain this gain?”
The law “is a retrograde step for Hong Kong,” says Matthew Evans, an ecologist and dean of science at HKU, emphasizing that this is his personal view. Although he is “not expecting a huge impact on what we do” in the faculty of science, he predicts that in the social sciences, law, and other disciplines, “people whose research or teaching could fall foul of the law will be self-censoring.” And there is likely to be an impact on recruiting, even for the sciences. “It will play into the issue that we’ve had persuading people from North America who are not ethnically Chinese to think about coming to Hong Kong,” he says.

I teach Liu Xia's "Empty Chair" in my poetry class and I hate to persuade my students to keep a poetry collection by her next to one by Liu Xiaobo, and that it's the ONLY way they can be forever next to each other. I can't imagine the magnitude of her loneliness at present.

Yesterday, I began my Mandarin Chinese classroom. Today, I want to start my personal challenge of learning Taiwanese~ Even though I've lived in Taiwan for 10 years, my Taiwanese is really bad! So, I have given myself the challenge of learning a bit of Taiwanese before July. How much can I learn in such a short period of time? Let's see if I can pull it off!
