事情發生於1936年伊利諾州一個名叫Joliet的小鎮，
新手騙子Johnny (Robert Redford飾)跟黑人搭檔Luther (Robert Earl Jones飾演)
在一場街頭詐騙中無意間發了一大筆橫財，
Luther拿回屬於他的那部份以後打算收山，
並且叫Johnny去投靠他在芝加哥的同行Gondorff，
然而Johnny卻把他的分紅在賭場揮霍一空，
Johnny招搖行徑讓他同時被黑白兩道盯上，
在他離開Luther家之後被當地的腐敗警察Snyder (Charles Durning飾)
拖入暗巷中毆打並索賄，同時Snyder還告知Johnny，
他跟Luther騙到的錢是來自於紐約黑幫老大Lonnegan的信使，
聽到這消息的Johnny為了脫身只好將身上的假鈔做成賄款拿給Snyder，
他深知Snyder的消息是最不靈通的，
如果連他都知道代表他跟Luther也早已被人鎖定，
Johnny想警告Luther，但是Luther家的電話卻不通，
他跑到他家一看，發現Luther已遭人毒手墜樓身亡，
別無選擇的他只好連夜逃往芝加哥去投靠Gondorff。
初次見到Gondorff (Paul Newman飾)的Johnny
便迫不及待地表達替Luther報仇的意願，
然而見過許多大場面的Gondorff認為不能操之過急，
單憑兩人之力無法完成，
因此他利用過往的人脈召集了來自全美、從事各行各業的騙子們，
一同研擬出報仇的方法，最終他們決定以賭馬站來引誘Lonnegan上鉤。
愛爾蘭黑幫老大Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw飾)除了經營非法生意以外，
同時也是銀行家，且跟檯面上的政治人物關係良好，
而他的生活極為規律及嚴謹，平時的娛樂只有玩牌，
但是他玩牌總是出老千，所以基本上跟他賭博就是每賭必輸，
且他還喜歡在每周從紐約前往芝加哥視察生意的火車上開包廂跟名流賭博，
Gondorff見到此特色便選擇從此下手。
在火車上Gondorff想盡辦法進入Lonnegan的賭博包廂，
且在賭桌上刻意用輕浮的態度來激怒Lonnegan，
沒被人如此瞧不起的Lonnegan一怒之下馬上使出老千，
但是卻被Gondorff反將一軍，直接在自己的賭桌上輸了$15,000。
至於Johnny，Gondorff叫他偽裝成對自己不滿的手下，
在前往Lonnegan包廂收款時表示Gondorff在芝加哥經營一間賭馬站，
如果Lonnegan想報仇可以從那裏下手，
報仇心切的Lonnegan便信了Johnny的話，
決定要靠Johnny給的內線消息來搞垮Gondorff。
當兩邊的鬥智正酣時，腐敗警察Snyder循線追來芝加哥，
因為他後來發現那些賄款都是假鈔而想要捉拿Johnny，
同時Lonnegan由於對Johnny不信任所以也暗中派殺手想殺他，
造成Johnny被黑白兩道夾擊，
更慘的是，FBI探員直接介入Snyder的行動，
且威脅Johnny如果他不配合辦案就要拿Luther的家人開刀，
別無選擇的Johnny只好選擇跟FBI合作。
在Gondorff的賭馬站嘗到幾次甜頭的Lonnegan卻還是懷疑有詐，
因此他積極探聽內線消息的來源，讓騙子們必須大費周章地取得他的信任，
在此時，Johnny跟一名餐館女員工Loretta (Dimitra Arliss飾)產生情愫，
Loretta甚至還幫助Johnny逃過殺手的魔掌，
在行動的前一天兩人在Loretta的住處發生關係，
但是Johnny醒來之後卻發現Loretta不知所蹤。
行動日的早上，Johnny在前往賭馬站的路上遇到Loretta，
而此時後面突然出現一個不明身分的槍手一槍打死Loretta，
槍手自稱是Gondorff派來保護Johnny的，
因為Loretta的全名為Loretta Salino，真實身分為職業殺手，
是Lonnegan派來要做掉Johnny的殺手大魔頭。
到了賭馬站時，Lonnegan一口氣押了$500K美金在一匹賭馬上，
他認為他手上的內線消息一定能替他贏下此局，
$500K的賭資換上賠率足以讓這間小資本賭馬店賠到脫褲，
結果誰知道Lonnegan得到的消息是騙子們放出來混淆他的，
導致他血本無歸，正當他不服輸、試圖搶回$500K的賭資時，
FBI跟Snyder帶著大批人馬衝進賭馬店，
Gondorff見此狀便朝Johnny開槍，Johnny因此倒在血泊中，
而FBI探員也開槍回擊，把Gondroff打倒在地，
並且要求Snyder在記者來之前把Lonnegan弄出賭馬店，
Lonnegan心有不甘，但是還是被Snyder拉出去了。
結果在Lonnegan跟Snyder走後，
Johnny跟Gondorff都醒了過來，
原來這些探員都是騙子假扮的，
為的是不要Snyder來打擾行動，
所以整件行動只有Lonnegan的人馬跟Snyder警官是反派，
得手Lonnegan的50萬賭資的騙子們便分了這筆錢，
慶祝他們成功替Luther報一箭之仇。
心得：
這部片被列為國會圖書館101大經典電影的#39，
我之所以會接觸這部片的原因是他的主題曲，
因為原作Scott Joplin是我最喜歡的鋼琴家，

除了主題曲以外，其他配樂也大多是Ragtime風格的，
因此挑選這部片來看有很大一部份的原因是配樂XD
而且我喜歡經典作的程度更勝於院線片，
查了一下評價便利用期末考的晚上把這部片看完了。
這部片最後的兩個劇情轉折(Loretta的真實身分 & 探員破門)
是看過的電影裡最戲劇化的一個，
然而卻讓人不會感到生硬，因為整部片都是騙子們的局，
因此間接觀眾們肉眼看到的未必都是真的，
而Paul Newman與Robert Shaw在包廂裡的老千對決實屬經典，
Newman利用表情跟小動作充分展現出一個騙徒的玩世不恭，
相較於Shaw的威嚴與一絲不苟，兩者構成極大的對比。
不過整部片我有一個地方不是很了解，
Johnny在Loretta工作的餐廳被暗算時，
情急之下跟Loretta躲進廁所裡，
而當下也只有Johnny、Loretta跟殺手三個人，
我比較不了解的是為何Loretta不直接把在廁所的Johnny推出去就好，
反而還幫忙掩護他、並且把沒幹好事情的殺手處決掉，
Johnny在整部片裡都沒有攜帶武器，
要把他做掉其實機會很多，然而殺手卻失敗多次，
