The big girl came back from school yesterday feeling a little disheartened because she didn't do as well as she hoped she would in her recent tests and barely passed in one subject.

It's not something totally unexpected since we chose to stay tuition-free all the way and practically spent the past few months on lots of other things - playing, crocheting, doing art, dancing, learning piano etc - instead of focusing on her academics. Given her usually high expectations of herself, there is no point in berating her when it comes to grades. So what we did was to sit down and have a talk about how hard work pays off and how failure is not the opposite of success but a part of it.

A few of our close friends have told me before that this girl is mature for her age and I can see why they would think this way. She really understands what I am trying to say at times even if I can't find the best words to put across my thoughts. 她真的懂我. She also asked me how I grew up without tuition because she really wants to stay on this path and I answered her "Self motivation." Well, that and probably faith and lots of good luck in my case. Still, times have greatly evolved and I know how this is much harder for her than it was for me, and I am so proud of you for trying your best, my dear.

Well, hopefully our talk reminded her of how we will always be here for her, in good times and bad. That grades don't define our character but our actions do. That life is about lots of more important things other than exams. That if she wants to compare, the only person she should do it against is herself. That whenever we fall, all we need to do is get back up on our feet and try again.

Love you, dear Angel. Slowly but surely, we will get there. Together. Meanwhile, let's continue to work hard while finding time to pursue your interests in life, yeah? Stay happy always, my girl.

At the age of seven, this girl amazes me in more ways than one.

Like how she learns to play the piano faster than I can keep up, how she skipped the first three stages of her SwimSafer Test and went straight to bronze, how she loves to cook and is good at using knives to chop, how she loves to watch zombie shows with her and is so composed and chill, and how she draws cute comics and writes sweet messages in her cards to us.

Much more importantly, she has the biggest heart and that is easily seen from how she dotes on her little brother and cares for her elder sister. In fact, she is often the mediator when it comes to resolving conflicts and helps to break up fights between the other two. She will try to reason with both, pacify them, calm them down and when that fails, she brings one party, usually the boy, to another corner and suggests games to play together so everyone is happy.

I always thought being the middle child would be hard because she has big shoes to fill and doesn't enjoy get out of jail free cards as much since she is not the baby of the family anymore. It is definitely not easy and I see her struggling from time to time too. However, she also showed me how it can be an amazing journey too because you get the best of both worlds, an elder sibling to learn from and do advanced activities with and a younger one to play with and still enjoy doing the kiddy things.

That said, we still have a few things to work on, like how she has a tendency to roll eyes, do facepalms or make snappy remarks at times. But then again, so do I. Haha. As far as I know, we are in a good place for now and a lot of credit goes to this little one.

May you always have that sparkle in your eyes, that infectious laughter and that willingness to give more than you receive. I ❤ you, dear Ariel!

P.S. Love this solo shot of her by @bloomphotographysg looking lovely in the hand me down dress from Jiejie. Yup, that's another thing about being a secondborn. 講座中我們提到在在速度選擇上，依照自己平常練習的速度走，千萬不要被他人左右，進來就是自己的速度，不論之前發生什麼事。另外，如果很會彈又有經驗的（阿姨/叔叔）鋼琴家給了很好的開頭，就跟著她/他手牽手一起走吧。👭

上台前你們都做些什麼事呢？吹前面四個小節30遍？還是去找鋼琴調音？培養場地的氣氛？想像為未來的工作環境，像是找到咖啡機在哪啊☕️⋯⋯說認真的，咖啡真的很重要☺️

更認真點，上台前還可以做的就是用節拍器還有橫隔膜的練習，像是橫隔膜斷奏或是橫隔膜連斷的變化，可以不加或是加上點舌的演奏，以避免橫隔膜在因為緊張的情況下可能產生的身體空間緊縮，進而達到類似在家練習演奏的肢體狀態。

In the Workshop we talked about the Tempo that shouldn’t be influenced by others but stick to your own tempo you want. Only if the pianist starts with the lovely tempo, then join him/her by holding his/her hand and make the beautiful music together. 👬

What are you doing before the audition? Finding coffee Maschine ?☕️ playing the four bars of beginning for 300 times ? Or maybe, try to tune with the piano on the stage, get yourself comfortable in the theater/concert hall, imagine this is your future working place?

Practice with metronome is a good option. Diaphragm exercises are also highly recommended, such as Diaphragm Staccato, variation of articulation doing by diaphragm with and without tonguing.
By doing these exercises, the space between spine and outer muscles gain their space instead decreasing its space and getting more tension on muscles in stress situation. Therefore, this will help you get more likely to your physical state as if you are playing/practicing at home.

At the end there’s a little hearing experience I had when I was listening to the audition of Wiener Philharmoniker, in which I saw a vision, a incredibly lively picture where butterflies 🦋 came out of the valley and fulfilled the picture.
Since then, I wish myself to play this beauty or maybe trying other pictures while playing.
