ยังคงเป็นปริศนาคารูแฟน ๆ หลังจากซีรีส์ American Horror Story season 6 ปล่อยทีเซอร์ออกมา ซึ่งหลายคนก็คาดเดาไปต่าง ๆ นานา ว่าน่าจะเกี่ยวกับเอเลี่ยนบ้างล่ะ ทุ่งข้าวโพด สิงหาสับ

แต่ช้าก่อน เพราะล่าสุดแอดมินได้ข้อมูลมาจากแหล่งข่าวที่เปิดเผยชื่อได้ (เว็บไซต์มือเสือกระดับพระกาฬ TMZ) ที่ลงรูปกองถ่ายซีรีส์ชุดนี้ มีรูปนึงที่ถ่ายติดต้นไม้ในเซ็ต เป็นต้นไม้ที่มีคำว่า Croatoan สลักอยู่บนลำต้น

เพียงเท่านั้น นักประวัติศาสตร์อเมริกา หลายคนก็เริ่มอ๋อขึ้นมาทันที

ต้นไม้สลักคำว่า Croatoan เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ Roanoke Colony หรือที่เรียกกันว่า นิคมโรอาโร้ก นครที่สาปสูญ

นิคมโรอาโร้ก ถือเป็นหนึ่งในปริศนาเก่าแก่ที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์อเมริกา เพราะมันเกิดขึ้นมาพร้อมกับช่วงที่คนอังกฤษอพยพมาตั้งรกรากในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ นั้นจึงหมายความว่าเหตุการณ์นี้ถือกำเนิดในช่วงก่อนการสร้างชาติอเมริกาด้วยซ้ำ

(AHS พาเราย้อนไปไกลสุดในซีซั่น 3 ที่พูดถึงช่วงล่าแม่มดในซาเล็มปี 1692 แต่ซีซั่นใหม่จะย้อนไปถึงปี 1584 ช่วงปลายศตวรรษที่ 16 เลยทีเดียว)

เรื่องราวของ Roanoke Colony นั้นยาวเป็นมหากาพย์ แต่เราจะเล่าเพียงย่อ ๆ แค่ว่ามันเป็นช่วงที่อังกฤษต้องการขยายอาณานิคมเพื่อเก็บเกี่ยวทรัพยากร และสร้างฐานที่มั่นในการต่อสู้กับสเปน พวกเขาจึงเดินทางมายังโลกใหม่ที่คริสโตเฟอร์ โคลัมบัส ค้นพบ แล้วตั้งรกรากขึ้นที่เกาะ Roanoke (ปัจจุบันคือรัฐนอร์ธ แคโรไลน่า)

ทว่าอย่างไรก็ดี เหตุการณ์หลังจากนั้นก็วุ่นวายไม่น้อย เมื่อชาวอังกฤษต้องเผชิญกับดราม่ากับชนพื้นเมืองเผ่าโครอาทัน จนลูกหลานแผ่นดินเกาะบริเตนถูกไล่ฆ่าไปเป็นจำนวนมาก เหลือคนอยู่เพียง 118 คน ท้ายที่สุด จอห์น ไวต์ ผู้นำอาณานิคม จึงตัดสินใจโล้สำเภากลับไปยังอังกฤษเพื่อขอความช่วยเหลือจากแผ่นดินแม่ ทว่าในช่วงนั้นอังกฤษก็เผชิญสงครามกับสเปน ทำให้เรือถูกลำต้องเข้าร่วมรบ กว่าอังกฤษจะมีชัยหลังจากนั้นเวลาก็ล่วงเลยไปนานหลายปี และเมื่อไวต์ตีเรือกลับไปที่โรอาโร้ก เขาก็ต้องพบกับเรื่องประหลาด

เมื่อผู้คนทั้งหมดเกือบ 118 ชีวิต หายสาปสูญไปจากอาณานิคมจนหมด ไม่มีร่องรอยการต่อสู้ ไม่ปรากฏพบศพ มีเพียงแค่ป้อมทิ้งร้าง และต้นไม้ที่มีถ้อยคำแกะสลักว่า Croatoan

นั่นคือชื่อเกาะแห่งหนึ่งของพวกชนพื้นเมือง ไรต์ตัดสินใจออกสำรวจเกาะโครอาโทน (ปัจจุบันคือเกาะแฮทเทอรัส) แต่ก็คว้าน้ำเหลว และต่อให้อังกฤษส่งทีมนักสำรวจมาเพิ่ม ก็ไม่มีใครพบเจอผู้คนในอาณานิคมอีกเลย

นี่จึงกลายเป็นปริศนาอันดำมืดของอเมริกาจนถึงปัจจุบันนี้
มีหลายทฤษฎีบอกว่า คนในอาณานิคมอาจถูกชนพื้นเมืองฆ่าตาย หรือเจอโรคระบาด ทว่าหากเป็นเช่นนั้นจริง ศพพวกเขาหายไปไหนกันล่ะ

ใครที่ดู AHS มาจนคุ้นจริต ย่อมทราบดีว่า ซีรีส์ชุดนี้จะนำเรื่องราวประวัติศาสตร์ในอเมริกามาเล่นแร่แปรธาตุ แต่งเติมเสริมแต่งเรื่องราวลงใหม่ ก็ไม่แน่ว่า Roanoke Colony อาจเป็นเพียงแค่การลงรองพื้นให้กับเนื้อเรื่องหลัก เพราะ AHS มักเล่าอดีตสลับกับปัจจุบัน อาจเป็นไปได้ว่าทีมผู้สร้างอาจนำปริศนาเรื่องคนหายไปคิดต่อยอดกับเรื่องประหลาดอื่น ๆ ต่อ เช่นถูกมนุษย์ต่างดาวจับตัวไปทดลอง ถูกคนลักพาตัวไปเป็นแรงงานมนุษย์ (หากลองเดาจากทีเซอร์) รู้สึกว่ายิ่งเขียนก็ยิ่งให้กลิ่นอาย The X Files มากขึ้น
