**5 IMPORTANT FIRE-SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR FAMILY**
1. Practice how to STOP, DROP, & ROLL
---
Even with a teeny tiny toddler, practice what to do in the event of a fire so it comes naturally. A big one to teach is how to stop, drop, and roll if they are ever caught on fire.
2. Have a fire drill (and make sure your child's nursery has a fire escape plan/drill too!)
---
Do you know where all the keys are kept and are they accessible in the event of a fire? Where do you convene if there is an emergency? Do they know where to go and how to get out? Do you know where your closest fire extinguisher/blanket/ladder is? Do they know how to stay low or how to check if the knobs are hot? What is the emergency help number where you live?
3. Put all your important documents in one place and in a fire-protected safe if you have one
---
In the event of an emergency, this is the folder that you ideally just grab and go. It should contain your passports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, insurance papers, identity cards/social security cards, emergency contact numbers. If you don't manage to get to it in time, at least it will be in a safe place that hopefully will offer additional protection so you can rebuild.
4. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home?
---
Unfortunately, gas leaks are a silent killer and can quickly ignite if a spark catches. You can easily purchase a carbon monoxide detector online and it will monitor the level in your home and set off an alarm if it is worrying. Please note that aerosol sprays will temporary elevate the levels but it is not cause for concern if the alarm goes off during this time.
5. Never leave an open fire unattended
---
Whether it's a grill, a fire place, or a decorative candle. Always make sure that you monitor it and keep it away from flammable objects. Also be mindful that most decorative candle wicks MUST be trimmed and can only be burned for a maximum number of hours. Be mindful also of the hot wax as well as leftover embers from a charcoal grill or fireplace AFTER putting out the fire. Always double check!
---
Lastly, if you are ever caught in a fire, stay calm and listen to your instincts. You only have a few seconds to act so ideally, with constant fire drills and practice, this will come naturally to you and your children. Prevention is always key so please look through this list again and discuss with your family members what needs to be done in the event of a fire and some changes that might need to be incorporated in your home to keep everyone safe.
---
Ps. A great way to teach fire safety is with a fire station visit. Introduce your little toddler to your friendly neighborhood firemen and what they do. Let them explore the fire trucks, listen to the LOUD sirens and learn that firemen/police officers are people they look for when they need help.
