Lesson 2: Rocket fuel for growth
3 ingredients you don’t want your competition to know.
Last week I wrote about how crafting a trajectory of your own is the most fundamental step early-stage founders can take in order to become great. In my 2nd piece of this 6 part series, I want to share with you three ingredients which act like rocket fuel that can accelerate any founder’s growth.
“You are the average of the five founders you spend the most time with” - The first ingredient that makes up the rocket fuel formula is to constantly surround yourself with founders who are better than you. Running a successful startup is extremely hard; there are so many intricacies involved such as raising capital, attracting talent, finding product-market-fit, to building a company culture that’ll sustain itself. By surrounding yourself with founders who have raised multiple rounds or operate companies that are 3x to 5x your startup in size, you will undoubtedly inherit their mindsets and principles that helped them succeed, growing much faster than if you’d been on your own. And this doesn’t stop with founders you only have access to physically; with the rise of social media and democratized information, some of the best founders in the world are sharing their knowledge and know-hows which you can continue to learn from in perpetuity.
The second ingredient is extremely ordinary so often overlooked - reading. How can this mundane task be an ingredient for rocket fuel? The secret lies in the asymmetry of time it takes to gather knowledge to produce a piece of useful writing versus the time it takes to consume that piece of writing. When a knowledgeable founder/PM/VC/specialist writes about their learnings and failures, it likely took them months or even years to produce, but by internalizing their lessons instead of manufacturing them yourself, you acquire the same insights in a fraction of the time. And by continuously reading and learning from those that came before you, you’ll accumulate so many years of knowledge disproportional to your experience which makes it seem like you traveled back in time.
The last ingredient which helps propel a founder’s growth to maximum velocity is to constantly embrace feedback from the world. This means welcoming feedback from the market on your product, feedback from your team about your leadership, and feedback from other founders and VCs on how to become better. This helps to align your perspective to reality, and only by having a true perspective of your surroundings can one actually progress. All too often I see founders dwell in their own version of the world and launch products that nobody wants, missing their targets, and unable to prevent unforeseen setbacks. Results are driven by interacting with the real world, so the earlier founders step out of their cocoons and transact with the real world, the quicker they’ll grow.
------
Next week I’ll be sharing my 3rd piece out of my 6 parts series on becoming a better founder. Tune back on the 18th of Jan and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave it down below!

《Me and the Table》
作者:Stephen Hendry
出版社:John Blake

Me and the Table
Author: Stephen Hendry
Publisher: John Blake
As an old saying goes, hardships can be truly felt only after actual experience.
We usually see only the moments people shine, and we can easily get jealous of them, wondering why they are so blessed with luck.
He once went shopping at Versace with his girlfriend, and they were greeted with a round of champagne. But, you never knew his family was frequently threatened. He was once warned that if he won a match, his son would be splashed with acid.
He once taught the Crown Prince of Brunei to play snooker for one hour. His reward was reportedly £5,000 and a knife inlaid with diamonds and rubies. But, you never knew he spent much of his childhood packing potatoes in his father's store.
He was world champion seven times, a record that has yet to be broken. But, you never knew after becoming world champion for the seventh time, he suffered from the yips for ten years, which is the loss of fine motor skills in athletes.
He is the king of snooker – Stephen Hendry from Scotland.
No celebrities were born successful. All of them go through hard times at one point or another, but we rarely hear about them.
Time waits for no man. Hendry has been retired for many years. His niece has become a professional snooker player and beat the Rocket, Ronnie O'Sullivan. Last year, Hendry re-published his autobiography – Me and the Table – to reveal many of his never-before-known experiences, key moments in his career, and his interesting relationships with his competitors.
This book was shortlisted for Autobiography of the Year by The British Sports Book Awards this year. Although it did not win, it is a worthwhile read for snooker fans and other sports enthusiasts.
About the writer: Uncle Shrimp loves reading, writing and athletics, and hopes he can continue exploring the world through sports.

Rocket Knight Adventures was a game that flew under many people's radars when it first came out in 1993, myself included. As for why I did not care about this game back then, I think it was because of its limited color-palette. It mainly features shades of blue and gray, which I did not appreciate back then. I really liked more colorful games like Sonic and Mario. Nowadays, I can appreciate its more realistic color-palette that faithfully recreates its steampunk inspiration.
This is my favorite Konami-game on the Sega Genesis or Megadrive. It's a masterpiece - a hidden gem. I did not appreciate it during its time, but I certainly do now.
I like how it looks. It's very sharp and detailed. Sparkster, the main character, is heroic but cute, and doesn't have an attitude. When he goes idle, he folds his arms across his chest, but he is smiling, as if he doesn't care if you never touch the controller again. He's such a nice guy.
The gameplay is very deep. You can throw out a medium-range attack by tapping the Attack-button, or you can hold the button and charge a rocket-boosted attack. If you press a direction as you let go of the Attack-button, you will go flying in that direction. If you don't press any direction while you let go of the Attack-button, you will spin in place, damaging anything that is within its hitbox. Also, if you hit an enemy close enough to your sword at melee range, you will do a lot more damage than either a regular attack or a rocket-boosted attack.
There is a good amount of variety to the levels, bosses, and gameplay offered. I like how there are horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up levels interspersed throughout the game. There is even a minecart-level, like in Gunstar Heroes. I appreciate how the game sticks to its steampunk-like theme throughout the game instead of giving us variety for variety's sake.

I played this game many times before being able to beat it. What you are seeing is the run of my first time beating the game on the Easy difficulty. I edited out my deaths, but there weren't too many to edit out; I was surprised.
This was the first time I played the game on a CRT TV while capturing upscaled footage on my computer via the OSSC. I split the signal into two using a Monoprice PREMIUM 3-RCA RGB RG-6/u Component Video Splitter (https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=2899). I also had to get a Monoprice 3-RCA RGB Coupler for Component Video Cable Extension (https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=3002). Some of the signal's brightness was lost, but I boosted it with the built-in brightness-toggle on the HD Retrovision cable.

As always, Longplays are here for you to use as you will. If you don't want to be spoiled, feel free to not watch the video at all. If you are trying to decide whether or not to purchase or download this game, take a look at the game and see if it's for you. Maybe you are a veteran of this game and want to see how someone else played the game. I hope this video helps or entertains somebody in the world.
I'm also posting these Longplays because it motivates me to beat games. I'm someone that gives up easily on games, and so having extra motivation is great. I am also kind of narcissistic in that I like to watch my gameplay afterwards. I want to have a record of my conquests.
I am working on a bigger project, but in the meantime, I will post smaller projects like this.
Thank you for watching and reading, and have a great day.
