“Creativity” and “Arts Education” have become such buzz words, and yet their hows and whys are barely understood. I argue that for children to live and breathe Creativity, we as adults must first deconstruct and redefine some concepts— (1) That Arts Education should have the goal of using Arts as a way to Educate, not merely educate for Arts; and (2) That in training skills for specific Art forms, practitioners need to engage the understanding of psychology and pedagogy in translating their know-how to their students.
Perhaps in addressing these two needs, we may further professionalise Arts Education, and subsequently put the propagation of the Arts on equal— if not higher— footing as other fields of study and social activities that are deemed “important” and “valuable.”
What do you think?
