#DesignerHighlight: Our Interior Designer, Dominic Cheung @thearchigent , aspires to inspire and uplift the lifestyle and comfort of people through creating humanistic and sophisticated space. He believes only by juxtaposing the old and the new – from materials to furniture – can we craft a story with space and time.
Started as an interior designer after graduated from the School of Design in Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he has developed the skills and sensibility in designing and realizing well-articulated space that connects people – from understanding client briefs, presenting design proposal, producing tender & construction drawings to managing project execution on site.
To work on architectural projects of a larger scale, his recently awarded degree in architectural design from Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff University allows him to expand his scope of work from crafting interior to building exterior. #jjacunabespokestudio

🔎Stage 2: Finding a company to apply
🔺Part 1 - Understanding your niche and abilities
Finding a company is easy, but finding one which suits you, where you can play to your strengths is challenging. Office culture, design ethos, scope of works, business management and employee growth plans are one of the many factors that you should consider. It is often the case that individuals will start criticizing the company’s employee treatment, pay check, lack of interesting projects, poor office environment after working for a period of time. However, these “complaints” could have been avoided if a company which best fitted to your expectations and interest was chosen instead.
Hence, understand what you want, be clear of your strengths and abilities, both your short and long term career goals and what kind of environment you would thrive in. This would be the best approach to find a job which can offer you a fun and comfortable working environment where you can grow too.
1⃣ Choosing a city/ town which you like to live and work in.
Each city has its own unique culture and appeal, with infinite options and endless
considerations, narrowing down your choice can be a nightmare.
Recalling back to the time when I was looking for a job, typing in these keywords into the search bar: “landscape design firms + region” and “UK cities” kick-started my journey of working abroad.
Other than understanding the nature of the company, I also considered aspects such as the physical environment – the city where the company was located, population density, transportation and weather. When travelling down for an interview, experiencing the city’s character, culture and vibe in person also helped expedite the decision making process.
This guiding process allowed me to quickly settle in, enjoy and be satisfied with my current lifestyle and working arrangements.
The environment makes us who we are, with 1/3 of your time being occupied with work, it is really important to have a comfortable working environment – For me, sitting by the window, looking out towards the vast green landscape would definitely be much better than sitting within the compounds of a concrete working cubicle.
2⃣ Be honest about your capabilities, Magnify your strengths.
Most fresh graduates would often use the same portfolio and CV content to mass apply to companies, hoping to land a job in one of their several attempts. However, this one size fit all approach to seek employment might not be the best and most effective.
Finding your niche will help you stand out from the rest of the crowd. That being said, understanding your professional ability and what you can contribute to the company is key to persuade the company to employ you. A few of my peers shared their experience for getting employed – An interested company would normally respond and arrange for an interview at the soonest. Their hiring decision made within a short time frame because they believe that your thinking, knowledge, expertise and skills best meets the needs of the company and are not easily replaceable by technology means.
The scope of works for the landscape profession is very large. It would definitely help reduce the amount of time and companies you need to filter through, increase your chances of getting employed if you can be certain of a career path you wish to dive further into. For example, water resource management, wildlife consultancy, landscape journalism, construction etc. In view of future career prospects, only by playing to your strength, can you find a sense of achievement.
The strategy of knowing yourself and your market, understanding your abilities and niche not only shortens the time spent to find a job, but also reduces the work pressure you will face in the future.

HOME OF GOOD FORTUNE
(English writing below)
...........................
This is my first time entering a new client's home, and telling her to tear the wall at the entrance hall, amidst many other changes.
I explained my rationale to my client - this is a heartless abode.
Occupants of a heartless abode will have emotional blockages and a closed mind.
A house like this enjoy no prosperity, no growth, no Peach Blossom Luck. When I was at the doorstep, I could already smell the decaying Qi of the home, like a rotten flowerbed.
❌ No prosperity 💸:
Your expenses equal your income. Situations kept popping up and you just have to spend. For the serious cases, they can't even earn enough and have to resort to borrowing from friends, relatives and friends.
Their money are barren like the mother hen that cannot lay eggs...
❌No growth 📉:
The adults have no new breakthrough and creativity in their career. They are unable to reach a new peak. They do work that they do not enjoy, with no chance of being promoted or transferring to a different department to try a new job scope.
The children are unable to manage their studies on their own. They improve a teeny weeny bit under adult supervision, and fall into shambles when the adult is away.
❌ No Peach Blossom Luck 🌸:
The occupants face many inter-personal issues and no benefactor comes to their rescue. When they go for interviews, they do not get the appreciation from others. At work, they meet with more villains than they can handle. Rumours about them fly abound.
When they submit their work to their managers, they do not receive their desired endorsement. When they meet clients, they often find themselves at a disadvantageous position and unable to win the support of clients.
❌Decaying House‘s Qi 💊:
The sign of a home of sickness. There will be at least one occupant who will often fall sick, and the sickness will not be minor. E.g. falling sick for two weeks, needing to see a specialist, requiring an operation, or chronic illnesses like atopic dermatitis, gastric, eczema, back pain.
The extent of the acutal impact will depend on these factors:
1) The current luck of the occupant's Bazi
2) Compatibility of the occupant's Life Magnetic Direction and the house's sitting and facing directions
3) The occupant's personal good fortune and virtues
4) Who are living with the occupant
--------------------
If a person's daily lifestyle routine is already ridden with problems, swallowing pills and supplements is not going to magically make him/her healthy.
If the foundation of a building is laid poorly, regardless how beautiful the construction is, it will not be able to support all the people and things inside.
Going by the same principle, if a house is a merciless abode, you will not be able to Lego your way to good Feng Shui, by buying a ton of auspicious ornaments or a bunch of children's toys.
Don't be naive.
A family's destiny and future is determined by the whether the home is a merciless or affectionate house.
When there is no harmony of the qi, no joy and happiness prevalent in the house, the adults do not get nourished emotionally upon returning home.
Note, when the adults do not get fulfilled emotionally, they are unable to create a home of love.
Where is the value of a home, when there is no love?
The Feng Shui inside and outside of the house must be lively and without any clash in order to create a harmonious environment. With harmony and free from disaster, wealth and prosperity will naturally follow.
Richalle was recommended by my participant from my very first Feng Shui workshop in 2016. I am thankful that she is generous and willing to share her experience. I would also like to thank the workshop participant for his support all these years.
The client did a fair bit of renovation, and this positive outcome is only the beginning of more extraordinary change to come.
Start from your home environment to create soothing Feng Shui for your mental state of mind, and that will put you in the right track to a sweet family life, the real home sweet home.
As long as she sticks to my advice faithfully, she will definitely recoup the money spent on my Feng Shui audit. If her personal good fortune and virtues are sufficient, perhaps she can even profit massively in tangible and intangible ways with this small investment. 😄

Aside from your Scope of Work, there is nothing more beneficial you can do for an accurate bid then to walk your potential contractors through the job so they can get eyes on the physical space, and ask questions in real time. This vlog only shows my walk through with the guys I wound up selecting, as I didn't want to be disrespectful to the other companies, but I did this walk multiple times. You gotta put the time in up front. #TheBuildTV #LoveTheProcess

The foundation of a successful construction project is based on getting a complete price for a full job...you get that price by taking the time to put a comprehensive bid package together. Period. There are no shortcuts on this one, you just gotta sit down and DO IT.
That said, enjoy the process, think about how great your space will be when this is all done. Imagine all the things you want in that space...can you see them? GOOD, now add them to your Scope of Work!
