May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory of the smaller Mexican force to defeat the larger French force was a boost to morale for the Mexicans
And Mexico's independence is celebrated on Sept 16th.

As you know, America is a nation of immigrants. But did you know that Colorado used to be owned by Spain? In 1803, the Eastern part of Colorado became part of the Louisiana Purchase, with the rest remaining under Spanish, and later Mexican, control until 1848. In Denver, Colorado, and many other cities, people of Hispanic and Mexican descent have a Cinco de Mayo festival with storytelling, parades, food, and dancing to the beat of salsa and mariachi music. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the Fifth of May. On this day in 1862, Mexican peasants won a battle against French invaders in La Puebla, Mexico. Many people mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexican Independence Day, but Mexico became independent on September 16, 1810 -- more than 50 years earlier. The people of Denver started celebrating Cinco de Mayo in 1987 as a small neighborhood street festival. By 1996 the weekend event had become so large -- attracting a half-million festival-goers -- that it moved to its new home in Denver's Civic Center Park. Does your city have a special festival? 🇲🇽 It's #CincoDeMayo!! 🇲🇽 celebrating the triumph of the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. This day reminds me of growing up in the Bay surrounded by loving, generous families who welcomed the Mai fam into their homes to celebrate and teach me lightweight Spanish. Ha! Gracias a todas las familias Mexicanas cercas de mi casa en San Jose por invitar a mi familia para celebrar juntos! I can't walk by cumbia music or hear the beautiful language without remembering all the Hispanic influence in the #Bayarea. Now if someone could take me and Freddy to see a real Mariachi band, day complete 😍😍 Feliz #CincoDeMayo everyone!
