子音 [p] 是無聲子音，屬於雙唇閉鎖音 (又稱爆裂音)，發音時緊閉雙唇，然後口腔以爆裂的方式送出氣流，同時放開雙唇，發音類似中文ㄆ。基本上 [p] 的發音會因為所在位置而稍有不同，我們將它分成四個位置。

(1) 子音 [p] 與母音拼音，出現在重音節，這時 [p] 的發音是最原始的 [p]音

(2) 子音 [p] 在字尾，這時 [p] 的發音，口腔爆破送出的氣流非常輕，甚至只是雙唇的動作，聽不到聲音

(3) 子音 [p] 在字中不拼音，這時 [p] 的發音，大概只會發一半，有雙唇的動作，但沒有送出氣流，也可說是「不出氣音」，例如單字 napkin, popcorn, September, lipstick。這個位置會受到後一個音的影響，雖然在字中不拼音，但也把 [p] 送出氣流，完整唸出來，例如單字 dumpling, prompt, accept 。除了這裡提供的例子外，請多觀察 [p] 與下一個發音之間的關係，會有不同的發音情況。

(4) 子音 [p] 與母音拼音，出現在輕音節，這時 [p] 會被強化，發音類似輕音的 [b] ，但不全然是 [b] 音。這個音非常難以描述，一般是這樣的說的，子音 [p] 不送出氣流，只有雙唇的動作。有老師說，其實是很類似注音符號的ㄅ。總結，可以確定的是，這個位置的 [p] 不會是原始 [p] 氣流這麼大。學習發音，不要過於吹毛求疵，畢竟是外國語音，能夠七分像已經很了不起，如果真的抓不到這個音的發音方式，用非常輕的 [b] 來拼音，也是不錯的。
