Guardian Malaysia launched a nationwide initiative to lower and lock the prices of 1,500 items of health, beauty, and personal care essentials to cushion the impact of financial challenges brought about by the pandemic. The “Low Prices Locked To Stay Low” initiative is a regional effort by Guardian SEA and underscores the Group’s commitment to ensure prices of daily essentials such as bath, hair care, personal hygiene, vitamins and supplements remain affordable during this challenging time when customers are increasingly looking to stretch their dollar.

I don’t often share about my work. So, many are surprised to hear that I’m a baby planner. I started my Maternity Concierge business to help expecting parents shortlist what they really need.

Why? Because I remember clearly when I was pregnant for the first time. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information out there. New parents are often inundated with the huge number of choices without realising there are plenty of affordable yet equally good options out there.

Raising a child need not be expensive as long as you manage your expectations. You don’t need all the things, just the essentials. In my book, The Chill Mom: How to go from anxious expectant mother to relaxed and confident mum, I shared that there are only 4 categories of things you’d need.

1️⃣ Baby sleep - Cot, mattress, bed linen.
2️⃣ Baby food – breast milk (free!) or formula.
3️⃣ Baby wear – onesies, and add some layers when it’s cold.
4️⃣ Baby poop – diapers and wipes are a must. And baby hygiene products - baby bath, shampoo and lotion.

That’s it. Everything else falls below the ‘nice-to-have’ category.

My favourite chapters that I found most helpful are:

- The minimalist baby preparation
- The ONLY baby essentials you will need
- Dunstan baby language
- Breastfeeding step by step
- Nappy changing step by step
- Bath time step by step
- Preparing your older child for new baby (will probably come back to this when we have #sgbbbb number 2)

Some revelations I've learnt from the book:

- newborns feed every 2 hours?!?!? cray cray omg goodbye sleep I'll miss you
- babies use up to 8 diapers a day?!?!?!? omg siao liao that's literally a lot of $$$ 💸💸💸 but I don't wanna use cloth diapers cos I think washing them will kill my sanity 😩
- baby sounds have different meanings!
- how to clean my baby's mouth, gums and tongue
- that I really don't need to spend a lot of money just cos we're expecting!

I think what Michelle does great in this book is really stripping it down to the BARE ESSENTIALS and keeping it very real. It's so easy to get caught up in all the ads and even seeing the lives of online influencers on Instagram keeps making me feel like there's so many things I need to buy to prepare for the arrival of our little one?!?”.
