There’s something new to discover in Malaysia everyday. Just last week, I saw and tasted Kerdas for the very first time!
Kerdas or Genuak has pods that change from green to brown as it ripens. The fruits - which are the brown seeds within, are neatly arranged in a row and are each covered with a thick, pale skin. They are deemed by only a few to be edible as they bear a pervasive skunky and pungent smell and taste. Those with a daring palate, however, will be amply rewarded as Kerdas brings numerous benefits such as flushing out the bladder, preventing diabetes, controlling high blood pressure and neutralizing blood sugar level. It is most often eaten as Ulam - raw and as it is with freshly steamed white rice! 🌰
