If you're ever in Barcelona and can spare a day or two, it's definitely worth making a trip to Girona! Just hop on a train, and you're there in an hour or so.
Girona is also home to one of the best restaurants in the world (El Cellar de Can Roca) - it has an 11-month waitlist, and I decided to try my luck, head to Girona for a night and call them up, just to see if I could get a single spot... Didn't work. 😔 I'll have to wait to try the food next time!
It's still a beautiful city to stroll in, even if you don't head there for food (that said, they still do have other really good restaurants in the area).
If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you should look up the list of places they've filmed at and walk your way through the city to locate them! I really enjoyed that solo stroll. 🙂
Do also remember to head up to the walls (Muralles de Girona) for a great view of the city, especially at sunset. I went for an uber long lunch that ended late, almost didn't make it in time, but I'm glad I caught the last bits of the fading light!

In 2007, when I was on a Contiki trip, Barcelona was the city I had the worst memories of. It was a Sunday afternoon, and we were given 3 hours to do what we wanted - except it also coincided with the typical siesta timing, and there was literally NOTHING to do but shop.
Fast forward to Jan 2015, and I decided to give the city another chance on my first solo travel, because my friends' descriptions about the city was the complete opposite.
I loved it.
Since then, I've returned to Barcelona twice in 2016, always using it as a base to start or end my trips to Spain. This was my 5th trip, and first time flying in from Granada. I've even started learning some basic Spanish, and even though I don't have any plans to head back soon, am intending to keep up the practice on the Duolingo app. :)
This trip was initially a cause for worry, as they were in the midst of their political issues and protests, but on the ground, the locals were welcoming, and I never felt unsafe or inconvenienced at any point in time.
Spain, and Barcelona, will forever hold a special place in my heart. ❤️

This is probably the most famous picture of the Alhambra, which I believe is the most visited UNESCO World Heritage site in Spain. Everyone was crowding to take pictures from this spot!
If you're planning to head to Alhambra (which includes the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife), make sure you book your tickets way in advance, as they sell out days before.
It's also important to plan your day's itinerary beforehand, as you'll have to decide what time you want to enter the Nasrid Palaces.
My suggestion? Book the entry for Nasrid Palaces in the early morning (I booked it for 9am). That way, you won't have to rush through the rest of the sights just to make in time to join the queue to enter the Palaces!
Print your pre-purchased tickets at any CaixaBank ATM in the Andalusia region with the credit card used during booking. On the day, take a slow walk up to the Justice Gate (Puerta de la Justica), which is the side gate that offers you quicker access to the Nasrid Palaces.
Rent the audio guide before getting in line, and after viewing the Nasrid Palaces, carry on to Generalife (where the gardens are), and then double back to the Alhambra (the fortress and walls), where you can end the tour and return your audio guide.
Pop into Los Diamantes after to enjoy lunch at a typical bar in Granada - it's approximately €2 for a beer, which in Granada, also gets you a free tapa. 3 drinks and tapas later, you should be full till dinner!
Should you make a last minute visit and not manage to purchase a general ticket, you can still (a) book a more expensive guided tour if they still have availability or (b) camp online at 11.59pm the night before, and wait for some last minute tickets to be released.
Also, there are some days of the week where they offer free entry into some of the city's attractions, like the Cathedral, Chapel of the Kings, and the Monastary. To register, check this site at least a week before: https://entradasgratuitas.diocesisgranada.es/
