I had an emcee job yesterday, so we checked in early for briefing and wanted to have late lunch/dinner before I got ready for my gig.
I told Azmi that we could just walk to the mall nearby and look for food there but he told me that we could just eat at one of the eateries at the hotel itself to “save time”.
The cafe was closed for a private event, so we went up to the Japanese restaurant and though I love my Japanese cuisine, I was not willing to part with RM130 for a premium bento lunch menu.
I am leaving for a summer course soon to help with my advocacy work and I need every sen to help pay for my stay there.
So I told Azmi, let’s eat somewhere else, or I can just grab a sandwich. He agreed.
We walked across and bumped into a friend of mine who told us about this food court which serves an array of food, was decently priced and the place was clean and “not smelly”.
Went there and had a sizzling seafood claypot for just RM12.90. It was piping hot and delicious.
I bring my flask of water everywhere I go. So I didn’t need to buy a drink. Azmi’s bebek dish was RM12.90 too and he shared water from my water bottle.
This is how I save money ... whenever and wherever I can.
People say “oh you are so lucky! You have so much money to travel!”
Alhamdulillah.
Most times, it’s part work where we are commissioned to shoot. But for our epic family trips or my charity work, it’s all paid via our savings.
I’ve learnt to only spend money when it’s an absolute necessity (like education, food and utility bills) and as I’ve said before, travelling is not expensive, if you learn to travel cheap.
I research for deals and draw excel sheets to compare prices of other promotions - I spend a lot of time planning the logistics and purchase most tickets online to get the best pricing.
Anyone who travels with us will see the food and portable cooking equipment we take with us on our travels.
Not only is packing food on the go cheaper, but the kids get hungry really fast, so having tuna or egg spread with bread ready, makes a fast snack. I buy salads and fruits at the local grocers and that’s a healthy way of filling our stomachs up (and helps with travel indigestion too!)
We don’t splurge on expensive hotels nor do we travel first class. I’m frugal but I will spend on excursions that bring forth experience and exposure to the culture and knowledge about the place. I’d rather spend money on that.
Someone DM when I IG storied my food at the food court.
“You eat at the food court?”
Yes. I do.
“Wow”
I also do my own laundry and pack super light for my travels. I travel on budget and have even slept in our rented car en route one place to another, during our road trips.
That is why my husband is probably my best travel buddy. He doesn’t mind my hippy ways. As long as we get to discover places ... together.
Like this Medan Selera. Never knew this place existed till yesterday.

These are Ella Grace's mama-approved favorite milk cartons that we usually pack w us on-the-go!
***
1. For smaller little ones that might not quite be able to finish a larger carton yet, this half packet from Dutch Lady Malaysia is perfect! The added bonus is that they also have Frozen or Marvel designs.
2. We recently discovered this carton from Fernleaf Malaysia and Ella has been loving it! It's 100% milk from New Zealand (recombined and packaged in Malaysia) and it is the best value among all three but without compromising on nutrition. They are currently having a buy 3 get 1 free promotion so I've seen it as cheap as 4 cartons for RM4.75 at Jaya Grocer. (Dutch Lady is RM4.65 for 4 half cartons)
3. Lastly, a perennial favorite but not always in stock, Ella Grace's "red milk" from Organic Valley. Although they keep it in the fridge here, it is actually UHT treated like the others and doesn't require refrigeration. I usually pack this with her snack box for school. The only con of this is that it is consistently the priciest of all of them (recombined and packaged in the US) but Ben's Independent Grocer usually has it the cheapest at RM9.90.
***
What does UHT mean and is it safe to feed my child this?
Yes! UHT just means that it's been pasteurized under high heat and is shelf stable. Although it does kill off a few nutrients, it is much safer for your little one to be consuming pasteurized milk and UHT cartons are a simple, convenient way to have a milk option on-the-go.
It is usually also transported in milk powder form then reconstituted before being heat treated and packaged into tetrapaks. This is why Fernleaf can offer 100% New Zealand milk without the New Zealand price. 😅
Please bear in mind that this is not a replacement of formula or breastmilk for little ones and should be treated like just a drink for those that have started weaning.
After 12m, contrary to popular belief, there is no requirement that children need to replace their formula or breastmilk w fresh or UHT milk. It is just another drink they can have but if your child is lactose intolerant or you just don't have a lot of milk, there are lots of other ways to get calcium and vit D into your diet too.
Always look for Full Cream milk as it contains the fats that little ones need for their brains to develop. There is also usually more additives and junk added to anything "low fat" so try to always stick w whole foods in their natural form as much as possible.

Hey y'all! Today i'm sharing 4 poke bowl ideas that you can make at home starting from less than $1! They are so delicious, so easy to make and super healthy! Yum!
Tofu is really affordable so that made the bowl really cheap to make! You can dress it up with your favourite vegetables that are in season right now. Some of these ingredients are probably even more affordable in US or maybe otherwise but these are some of easiest to add to a poke bowl!
☆ Crispy Tofu ☆
Make sure you buy a firm tofu and not silken soft tofu. Drain the water from the tofu by wrapping it with a kitchen towel/paper and put a heavy object on top of it. Leave it for at least 30 minutes.
Then chop it up into cubes of your desired size. Take a zip lock bag and chuck all the tofu in there. Add a tablespoon of Soy sauce then shake it. A teaspoon of sesame oil and shake again! Then let the tofu absorb the sauces for about 10 minutes or more. Then coat it with some potato starch. Add little by little. Then shake it so that it is evenly coated and make sure that it is thinly coated!
Now put it in the oven at 180 degree celsius/360 degree fahrenheit for about 25-30 minutes. You may need to go up to about 200 degree celsius/400 degree fahrenheit if you have a big oven or your oven is not as hot. Adjust it based on your oven.
The tofu will turn out to be VERY crispy. Very tasty!
☆ Sea kelp Recipe ☆
You can choose to buy the pre made ones from a Japanese or Korean store.
400g Seaweed
2 TBS of Apple Cider
2 TBS Soy Sauce
1 TSP of Sesame Oil
Ginger Powder
Toasted Sesame Seeds
Cayenne Pepper
1 TSP of Monk Fruit
1 TSP of Mirin
☆ Sesame Dressing ☆
6 TBS of Toasted Sesame
3 TSP of Sesame Oil
2 TBS of Apple Cider Vinegar
2 TBS of Soy Sauce
1 TSP of Mirin or Sake
Sweetener
Filtered Water
Adjust the ingredients based on your liking.
Chuck them all in a food processor and blend it until smooth
