Our Cities

In the last 35 years, the urban population has grown by 2.3billion people. Every week, an estimated three million people are moving to cities. By 2050, 68% of the world’s population is projected to live in urban areas. Cities are responsible for more than 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions. “Our struggle for global sustainability will be won or lost in cities.” Explore our changing world with Timelapse in Google Earth.

Nearly half of the world’s forests have already been cleared or degraded for human use. Every minute, an area of tropical tree cover the size of 40 football fields is lost. At the current rate, 60% of the Amazon rainforest is projected to disappear by 2050. Explore our changing world with Timelapse in Google Earth.

Our Ocean

The Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the globe. Today, Greenland is losing ice seven times faster than it was in the 1990s. Sea levels are rising 3.6mm per year, the fastest rate this century. If the current rate of warming continues, sea level rise will put more than 800 million people at risk by 2050. “Sea-level rise may by inevitable, but this should not lead us to inaction.” “The sooner emissions are cut, the greater the reduction of future sea level rise.” Explore our changing world with Timelapse in Google Earth.

Today is #EarthDay, and this year marks its 50th anniversary.
This year’s celebration happens amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Singaporeans, like people across the world, are staying home in an effort to stop the spread of this disease. But thanks to technology, we can still enjoy the breathtaking beauty of our shared home through virtual tours (check out this article for some beautiful examples: https://go.gov.sg/nddgec) and amazing tools like Google Earth.
As glum as things seem now, COVID-19 will eventually pass. But the wicked problem of climate change will still be with us, and it will be even harder to tackle. It is sobering to think that if we fail to slow down climate change, these virtual tours may be all future generations have to remind them of what was lost because we did not take action sooner.
Singapore cannot stop climate change by ourselves. It needs a global effort. But we will do our bit. Each of us must do our bit too, through small and sustainable steps, for example by wasting less food, choosing more energy efficient options, and recycling more. Let us all do our part to protect our Earth. – LHL

//Let me respond:
1. You rule by surveillance. You wouldn't be president without surveillance.
2. Surveillance is a denial of freedom. And a nation that is not free, is not creative.
3. You, your government and your scientists had to know long ago that Corona is highly infectious, but you left the world in the dark about it.
4. The "Washington Post" reports that your laboratories in Wuhan have been researching corona viruses in bats, but without maintaining the highest safety standards.
5. In your country, your people are whispering about you. Your power is crumbling.
Your embassy tells me that I am not living up to the "traditional friendship of our peoples."
I suppose you consider it a great "friendship" when you now generously send masks around the world. This isn't friendship, I would call it imperialism hidden behind a smile - a Trojan Horse.
You plan to strengthen China through a plague that you exported. You will not succeed. Corona wants to be your political end, sooner or later.
Yours sincerely
Julian Reichelt//
