Today is a day we have been looking forward to - we were going for a 9-hour island hopping excursion to visit both St John's Island and Kusu Island! Woohoo!

I had brought along our ponchos and an umbrella but was hoping that the weather would be good. It did turn out to be a super hot and sunny day and all of us got sunburnt at the end of it. Haha.

Here's sharing some pics from our visit to St John's Island. We went on a guided tour and walked over two hours where we learnt about how St John's Island acted as a quarantine station for cholera cases in the 19th century, how it was the site of Raffles' anchorage in 1819, how our third president Devan Nair was detained here by the British, and also visited the Sisters' Islands Marine Park Public Gallery (yes, it is on St John's Island!). Along the journey, the kids saw the Mickey Mouse plant, spotted fishes, prawns, mudskippers, grasshoppers, ants and bees, learnt about the sea almond tree and how to play an old school game using casuarina leaves too. It was a fun way to enjoy some outdoor time and I am so happy we did this.

They loved the ride on the ferry and it made us feel like we were going on a holiday even though we were only going to the Southern Islands. Haha. Never go cruise, take ferry also not bad, right? They insisted on going up to the open deck at the upper level every time to enjoy the breeze, admire the ocean view and just take in as much of nature as we can.

Phew! Feeling glad and thankful that today was a good day! And that we survived the long hours, even the boy who skipped his afternoon nap amazed me by walking almost entirely on his own (he also got to eat sweets, have cold drinks and eat ice cream, lol). Yay!

P.S. You can't get food or drinks (except top up plain water) on the islands and I was so grateful I thought of bringing along chicken rice and roasted pork/char siew rice. With braised eggs! Along with lots of biscuits, Milo and 4 bottles of water (which we topped up). They kept us full and gave us energy to keep going!

Going to town to catch a movie on a Monday evening? Well, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do this initially because it meant the big girl might not finish her homework and the younger ones might not wake up in time for school the next day. But I didn't want to make the decision on my own so I asked the kids if they wanted to watch PLAYMOBIL: The Movie and of course, the answer was "YES! YES! YES!"

We made our way in the rain and took the train to Capitol Theatre where the premiere was held. The moment we stepped in, the kids were thrilled to see the mascots and the first thing they did was to take a photo and show them their PLAYMOBIL toys - we had brought along everything we had at home. Lol.

We saw the movie trailer previously and the kids already thought this show would be funny and highly entertaining. Well, they were totally amused and engrossed during the 98-minute show and yes, they laughed a lot too.

The movie talks about how Marla goes on a quest to rescue her younger brother Charlie when he vanished into the magical universe of PLAYMOBIL and ends up in the hands of the evil Emperor Maximums. Along the way, she teams up with food truck driver Del, secret Agent Rex Dasher, a kind-hearted robot and a fairy godmother and overcomes many obstacles because of her sheer determination to save her brother.

I love how the movie switches seamlessly from reality to the animated kingdom and how it reminds us that sibling love can be so powerful that it makes you do things you never thought you would. It also reminds us to stay adventurous and never let go of our imagination, no matter how life gets us down. Oh, the songs are quite catchy too and I love the one sung by the fairy godmother (voiced by Meghan Trainor).

Was it worth staying up and travelling far for? Yup, it definitely was and I am so glad the kids and I did it.

The movie opens in cinemas on 29 August. Thanks to Encore Films and Golden Village Pictures - Film Distribution for having us tonight!

Our simple, yummy dinner tonight that cost us $17 for 4 people.

Yup, we are making it a habit to visit the hawker centre more regularly when we dine out because I don't want these kids to take it for granted that we can always go to restaurants, fast food centres or even air-conditioned food courts.

Besides supporting our unique local hawker culture and saving up money, it's also a way for me to teach them to better cherish what they have in life and learn to stop complaining or wishing for more.

Nowadays, I just leave them alone to do their drawing or play their own self-invented games while I go and get the food. Some stalls are out of sight and the queues are super long, but they never grumble and always wait patiently for my return. Okay, sometimes they bicker and I can hear their screams from far away but I pretend not to. Haha. They also learnt not to whine about the heat or stuffiness and that it's okay to sweat profusely when we eat. It makes them understand the value of money, to learn to be thrifty, and to realise that sometimes the best things in life can be the simplest, and most inexpensive, ones.

Hope to treasure more of such happy moments with the kids. Thank you for being such awesome company!

P.S. They were motivated to eat fast because we were seated near an open space which had a nice playground with climbing structures and a tunnel slide. Looks like this will become one of our favourite spots.

P.P.S. A friendly old lady sat next to us and we started chatting. She saw the kids eating obediently and asked if all three kids are mine. Then she said "你很厉害!" which I always disagree because there are so many mums who have more kids than me. She also said "你自己看孩子，现在一定忙，但是二十年后，你就有空了。" Yup, wise words from a 过来人. Not sure if it makes me look forward to 20 years later, but it does remind me to cherish my every day with them now and for the years to come. Thank you, auntie!
