After a season filled with turmoil and
injuries, the Indiana Pacers finally are at full strength.
Stephen Jackson, Peja Stojakovic, Jamaal Tinsley and Jermaine
O'Neal started together for the first time this season, and they
all played major roles in Indiana's 92-79 win over Philadelphia on
Sunday afternoon.
Jackson scored 23 points, Stojakovic added 18, Tinsley finished
with a season-high 14 assists and O'Neal added 11 points and nine
rebounds. It's a group Indiana had been hoping to get on the floor
since Stojakovic joined the team two months ago in the trade that
sent Ron Artest to Sacramento.
Tinsley and O'Neal started for the first time in two months
after injuries. Jackson, who benefited most from the upgraded
lineup, said more games like Sunday's should follow.
"It's hard to double-team us," Jackson said. "Before Peja
came and J.O. came back, I was getting double-teamed. I never
thought I'd get double-teamed in my life. But with them out there,
it's easier to beat my man."
Reserve Danny Granger had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Jeff
Foster grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Pacers recover from Friday
night's 75-72 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Philadelphia lost its
second straight.
Allen Iverson scored 26 points and Chris Webber added 24 for the
76ers, but no other Philadelphia player scored more than eight.
Iverson, the league's second-leading scorer, shot 2-for-12 from the
field in the second half.
Iverson said the effort was pathetic for a team that is fighting
to get into the playoffs.
"There's no way to explain it," he said. "We got beat up
today. We are not stopping anybody. It's hard to get into a running
game or get easy baskets when you are always taking the ball out of
bounds after the other team scores."
Tinsley, who guarded Iverson for much of the game, wasn't as
worried about starting as he was about getting on the floor. He has
played in only 34 of the Pacers' 68 games because of right elbow
and biceps injuries.
"I'm just happy to be out there," he said. "I've had two
tough injuries, but that's the nature of the business. I'm just
glad to have the opportunity to play. I just go out there and do
it."
Indiana held Philadelphia to 37 percent shooting and
outrebounded the 76ers 48-36 in a sloppy game that featured a
combined 45 turnovers. The Pacers set a season high with 29
turnovers.
The Pacers shot 50 percent in the first half to offset their 15
turnovers and take a 52-45 lead at the break. Granger scored 15
points and Foster grabbed 12 rebounds in the first half.

With Richard Hamilton sidelined, the Detroit Pistons abandoned their three-guard lineup and used a bigger starting unit that stifled the Milwaukee Bucks.
Tayshaun Prince scored nine of his 19 points in the decisive third quarter and Allen Iverson added 18, lifting the Pistons to an 87-76 victory Saturday night.
The Bucks had won three consecutive games, averaging 106 points during the streak. The Pistons, starting 6-foot-9 Amir Johnson in place of Hamilton, a slim 6-7 guard, held Milwaukee to 30 percent shooting.
"Everything got started because defensively we were very good," Detroit coach Michael Curry said.
Johnson had eight points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, giving the Pistons a different defensive look from their usual lineup that consists of 6-11 Rasheed Wallace as their only big starter.
The Pistons acknowledged after the game that they are better defensively with Johnson on the floor, and better offensively when Hamilton and Iverson are on the court together with guard Rodney Stuckey.
"When we have the bigger lineup, obviously we're better defensively," Prince said. "It's kind of pick and choose. "Sometimes you are going to need the offensive side, but more importantly you're going to need the defensive side."
The game was tight until Detroit went on a 27-5 run midway through the third quarter. Milwaukee missed 14 of 17 shots during one stretch of the period, trailed 73-55 after three quarters and never got close again.
"We've been good [defensively] in stretches, especially with two bigs on the floor," Curry said. "With the small lineup that we usually start, we give up that inside presence. Not having that other big, teams attack even more to the inside. When they attacked today, if they did get by Amir or Rasheed, the other one was there to protect the basket. They also didn't attack the paint nearly as hard."
Andrew Bogut had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Milwaukee, which mainly rested its starters for the final 15 minutes after the game was decided. Michael Redd, the Bucks' leading scorer, had four points and missed nine of 11 shots, including his last five.
"Because I'm putting the other guys in doesn't mean I'm giving up on the game," Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said. "I still intend to win the game. It can be very confusing on certain nights of why certain guys just don't have it, but it does happen in the NBA."
Hamilton missed the game with a groin injury that he aggravated in Friday night's victory over Oklahoma City. He is listed as day to day, and Curry recognizes the need to get him back in the lineup.
"We all understand that we have two shooting guards and both of them are very, very good," Curry said. "We need to give them fair time on the court so they can be productive. Because of that we lose some time with our bigs."
The Pistons beat Milwaukee for the 10th time in 13 meetings since the 2005-06 season.
Wallace had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Stuckey added 16 points for Detroit, which has won three straight and six of eight.
"It's a bit discouraging to lose at home, but we've had one bad game out of the last six or seven home games," Bogut said. "That's no excuse."
The Pistons missed their first five shots of the second half and Luke Ridnour's jumper gave Milwaukee its last lead, 48-46, with 10:35 left in the quarter.
Stuckey then tipped in his own missed layup to tie the score at 48, starting a 27-5 run in which Detroit made 11 of 15 shots to take a 73-53 lead on Prince's free throw with 19 seconds left in the period.
Prince had nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the third.
Milwaukee was so out of sync that Skiles went with a lineup of Malik Allen, Joe Alexander, Tyronn Lue, Dan Gadzuric and Ridnour with 3:40 left in the third quarter, leaving most of the starters on the bench the rest of the way.
Game notes
Milwaukee G Damon Jones joined the team. Jones was obtained in an offseason trade, but he hasn't played for the Bucks by mutual agreement as they worked with his agent in an attempt to work out another trade. When a deal never materialized, Jones reported to the team Saturday night and was inactive

IT HAD the feel, the aura of a prizefight. Here was Allen Iverson, in his Denver Nuggets uniform, a Band-Aid covering a cut above his left eye, resolutely walking through the door of the postgame interview area, past a cordon of TV cameras, tape recorders and security, the final steps of his path roped off from the assembled reporters.
In this corner . . .
Was the former 76ers star guard.
Open.
Thoughtful.
Informative.
Patient.
This wasn't the Iverson who, before facing the Sixers in Denver in January, said, "I don't care anything about them," and said that despite having been with them for 10 years "they kicked me out as if I had been there 1 day."
This was a gracious, contemplative Iverson. The warrior in him would have to wait until the game started.
"I'm 32 years old now, simple as that," Iverson said before last night's 115-113 Sixers win. "That's the only answer I can give you. I don't make the mistakes, do some of the things I was accustomed to doing anymore. I don't want to be that person that I used to be.
"But I don't regret any of it, because I feel like going through what I went through here, my ups and downs, helped me to be the man I am today . . . I would never want to throw away the experience I had in Philadelphia. I don't regret anything, but I'm just not that same person.
"I still make mistakes off the basketball court. I still turn it over on the basketball court. But I think I'm a better person, a better player at this point in my life."
He dealt with the media for 15 minutes, 6 seconds, then left to complete his preparation for his first game against his former team in his former arena. When he came through the tunnel leading to the court to warm up, he ran directly to center court, kissed the Sixers logo and waved to however many people were already there.
When public-address announcer Matt Cord - who usually low-keys the visitors' lineup during introductions - began a louder, more complete introduction of Iverson, it was virtually impossible to hear his final words. The sellout crowd was already standing, applauding, cheering wildly. The ovation lasted 1 minute, 5 seconds and might have gone longer had Cord not begun introducing Iverson's backcourt mate, Anthony Carter. As a frame of reference, when Charles Barkley returned to the Spectrum for the first time with the Phoenix Suns in 1993, his standing ovation lasted 42 seconds.
Through it all, Iverson remained stoical. He walked a few steps in different directions. Finally, he cupped his hand to his ear, a signature move from the best days of the Iverson Era. The sound level rose.
He said he wanted the entire experience to be positive. And it was. There were Iverson jerseys all over the stands. There were also some Andre Iguodala jerseys. And at least one Thaddeus Young jersey. You knew Iverson was taking it all in. Meanwhile, his mom, Ann, sat courtside in the second row near the Nuggets' bench, signing dozens of autographs.
But earlier, he reflected on the Iverson who came to Philadelphia in 1996 as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft.
"I came to this organization, I was 21, I thought I was ready," he said. "I wasn't ready. I never had a dime in my life, and then all of a sudden I came into a bunch of millions . . . I was a fish out of water.
"I did a lot of things [with the Sixers] . . . Looking back on it, it's embarrassing, but I can share a lot of experiences, a lot of do's and do nots. I don't regret any of it."
