Wanhua is one of the oldest districts in Taipei and one of the most interesting to wander around. I've always wanted to take a closer look at the streets around Longshan Temple and drawing them is a good way of doing it. Along with the temple there are other well-preserved old streets and markets. A lot of people think of the area as one in decline but it's been turning its fortunes around over the past decade. The fan shape of this drawing developed naturally over the course of making it. I will not be making open edition prints of this drawing, though part of it appears in my Taipei postcard series and I may use it for a couple of other things like that. It did not escape my notice that the area has a lot more people who are down on their luck than I'd noticed five or ten years ago.
