音樂演奏系統出身的王湘靈，長期關在琴房苦練的她，在畢業後開始轉向影像創作。會有如此轉變，王湘靈認為，古典音樂的訓練十分嚴謹，而相對來說，視覺藝術創作顯得自由開放，更適合她進入發揮。
自言不喜歡生活一成不變的王湘靈，更熱愛移動的狀態，盡力於無所停滯。
王湘靈且極其迷看公路電影，尤其拍出許多精彩公路電影如《愛麗絲漫遊城市》、《歧路》、《公路之王》（合稱《公路三部曲》）等的德國新浪潮電影名導、亦為攝影師的文．溫德斯（Wim Wenders），在其啟發下，王湘靈開始公路攝影的創作。
《質變》是王湘靈奪得臺北美術獎首獎的影像作品，探討面對孤獨的可能性，照片中有著黑暗、樹與自然環境。透過此系列，她逐步了解到人類對自身孤獨的恐懼與背對，因而更願意與自己相處，珍惜獨處的難能時刻。
新近展出的《快要降落的時候》，一方面延續《質變》的追索，仍舊關懷著孤絕主題，以及人與萬物自然的空間對應，但又加入了音樂作為時間性的元素，大器地演示時間中的空間、空間中的時間概念，並傳達當代人類活在虛空中的反思。

1984年生於臺北，2013年取得紐約市立大學音樂演奏碩士學位。在完成學業後逐漸朝視覺藝術發展，媒材以影像為主，2013-2014年修習於紐約國際攝影中心（ICP）。2015年獲捷克布拉格「年度攝影獎 (Photo Annual Award)」第一名、2015年獲法國「PX3, 巴黎攝影獎（PX3, Prix de la Photographie Paris）」優選，同年獲得臺北美術獎首獎。2017年參加法國西帖國際藝術村駐留計畫，目前工作和生活於台北。
