The opening sequence of Cats the Movie was very spectacular. It made me wonder whether all the people who badmouthed the movie were uneducated heathens who didn't understand anything about poetry or musicals. But as the movie progressed, I began to realize how bad it really was. Granted, there were some great scenes, ie the group dancing to Jellicle Cats, and actually Taylor Swift paying tribute to Macavity was my favorite thing in the movie and I'm not even a Taytay fan. I didn't enjoy Jennifer Hudson singing Memory as much as I thought I would, though. I was rather underwhelming.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend that anyone spend their money on this. There was a 1998 stage version that was filmed which I thought was much much much better. Download that instead.
Rebel Wilson was awful. So was Jason Derulo. James Corden was tolerable. Of course, Judy Dench and Ian McKellen can't do anything wrong, but their roles were, at best, cameos. That diminutive ballerina whose name I can't remember, and Jennifer Hudson were OK. But the others were just wrong wrong wrong. They all seemed like they didn't understand what the story was all about. And don't even get me started on Idris Elba.
Next one coming out from Andrew Lloyd Webber is Sunset Boulevard. It would absolutely destroy me if that turned out to be a critical flop.
