在漢代傳統文化中，青龍、白虎、朱雀、玄武是為四象，分別代表東西南北四個方向。中國傳統方位是以南方在上方，和現代以北方在上方不同，所以會說左青龍（東）、右白虎（西）、前朱雀（南）、後玄武（北）來表示。

“四靈”源於中國古代的星宿信仰。中國古人認為天上有二十八星宿，又把東、西、南、北四方每一方的七宿形狀想像為四種動物形象，即青龍、白虎、朱雀、玄武。人們認為，這些動物是神靈之物，故稱之為“四靈”。於是，以後便用“四靈”指代東、西、南、北四個不同的方向。
The four spirits of the heavens are square to the four dirctions.
The "Four Spirits" originated from the ancient Chinese star beliefs. The ancient Chinese believed that there were twenty-eight stars in the sky, and the seven-seat shape of each of the east, west, south, and north sides was imagined as four animal images, namely, Azure Dragon, White Tiger , Vermilion Sparrow, and Black Tortoise. People think that these animals are the things of the gods, so they are called "four spirits." Therefore, in the future, the "four spirits" will be used to refer to the four different directions of east, west, south and north.
