Some people may wonder if they like to run a new record or make their New Personal Best. It's better in 1 minutes. Why do they take it to the Olympic competition or nothing?
2
I'm one of those kind. They keep chasing their own PB. At the beginning of the year, I aimed for myself this year for only three targets. One - One marathon sub4, two - Half run sub1: 50 hours. And three - finished four marathons
3
Last year, I did the best full marathon time at 4:09 hours. At Moscow, half-time. If I remember correctly, it should be 1:52 hours. At the Bangkok marathon, I set my dream for myself. And 4 marathons a year. I calculate to myself for fun. I collect 25 more years and I will complete 100 marathons when I was 65 years old. Actually, it's a plan. Forcing myself to exercise (now I run for three jobs. The end of the year will post another one)
4
With power of stars or luck, I don't know. I finished the Tokyo marathon for 3:58 hours. (without knowing if I can do it again) and go run halfway in Laguna Phuket. Ends in 1:50 hours. The scraps for a second. I'm glad but I'm curious that I will do it under 1:50 hours. Can I? I encourage myself that I have to have Silaguna. There are plenty of hills. If I encounter a simple field, I should have a chance.
5
Laguna work. I feel like my body is better than last year. So I went to half a lotus work. I was confident that I could manage my goal and... As I have told, the clock doesn't wake up! Running the wrong way to become DNF without coins.
6
It's okay to fail. Put it there is always a new stadium. This August has landed a half-day job in Bangkok. Mother's day and a released event in CentralWorld. I don't dare to aim for anything anymore. My target is very easy... Just wake up. Go for a run
7
I like the route. Today is a familiar route from the Sirikit Convention Center. Running out of Sukhumvit through Nana Ploenchit Chidlom, Siam Mahanong, Chulalongkorn, Chulalongkorn, Chulalongkhum, turn around. Passing through this convention center two rounds is a familiar way and... no bridge!!
8
Of course, the plateau is inviting you to think about running. Good time. I did my homework and plan with myself to start with Pace 5'20 ′′ until the fifth kilometer. If I can't, I will adjust to 5'10 ′′ until the ten th kilometer. Then If the power is left, then speed up to Pace 5, but then don't be slow to 5'10 ′′ if you want to, it ends below 1:50 hours.
9
The horror of the running field is the distance on the sign. It never matches our watch and it's always ′′ long ′′ and ′′ far ′′ and ′′ far ′′. The fourth kilogram has been found. The fourth kilogram of the sign has been found on the fourth kilogram. The fourth kilogram has arrived in the fourth The computation plan always keep this going.
10
Released myself. I tried to hit a good runner. Went to see the clock. Many times I was shocked because the number told Pace 4'30 / 4'40 ′′ When I saw it, I tried to warn myself that ′′ don't be fizzy I tried to knock it Go as planned, but the first five kilograms of PCE is at 5'10 ′′ It's faster than the plan. Finish ten kilograms at 52 minutes. I think in my heart that I don't ask for much. Just keep Pace Let's keep it going. It's okay.
11
I have arrived at the convention center again. Half way over. Heart is starting to beat faster. Outgoing muscles. I know that I can't speed up and knock this page to the end. I thought I might be able to follow the target. It's very hot but I know that I can't stop. Brutal is the distance in the sign. Worried because it's behind the clock. It's almost a kilogram. That's what it takes
12
During the 11th kilometer, there was a young man running from behind and said ′′ Brother Ae, running very stable I turned to laugh and said thank you. But in my heart, I thought that ′′ you are going to die, I started panting But this one is like an angel. I His (real) steady running to CentralWorld split has helped make my running so much better. Big tall, big, spicy, and handsome. But I didn't run after her for these reasons.
13
Meanwhile, if Pase starts to fall to 5'30 ′′ I tried to speed up until some kilograms ended at 4'53 ′′ but when I arrived, the merit was crowned (15th kilogram), the speed fell to 5'30 ′′ I know. I thought I couldn't speed up anymore. And if I speed up, I would risk to crack in the last kilogram. Then I console myself. ′′ I will record the last two kilograms
14
Finally, the most fun of marathon or half-time is to adjust the plan according to the physical condition on the day of the race. It has to be modified. When, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, where, it's planned
15
I'm Tui Pace 5'30 ′′ all the time on Rama 5'30 road. I haven't finished today's goal. Because the tag says distance continues to hurt all the time. I try to calculate the distance by the watch. I think if it's not there, if I have I'm excited.
16
There is one sentence I wrote in the book ′′ Teacher in Cookie Shop ′′ that we don't win because we don't want to win enough I asked myself if I ended up in the book ′′ but not below 1:50 Watch it. Will it be a pity? Because today is considered a good run. Will I look back? If the last kilogram, I could do it more.
17
That minute I stopped looking at the clock, stopped looking at the sign, said the distance and listened to the heart, ran with it. The heart couldn't run too hard. But if I could, I would try to speed up.
18
When I accelerate, I'm tired. I breathe harder. Muscle moans heavily. As soon as I turn to the convention center, I'm not sure how many meters I have left. I just know that ′′ this minute I have to measure!" I use the power Run as fast as you can. Speed change from Pace 5'41 ′′ in the 20th kilo to only 3'51 ′′ in the last kilogram.
19
I look at the clock. There are 2 minutes left until it's 1:50 hours. How is it? Suddenly, the running distance becomes close to the clock again, but there is no time to think about anything. Chop one leg!
20
The finish line is there! I saw the Gun Time numbers shown 1:49 hours ago. The power comes from nowhere. I have passed the person in front of me and finished the finish. Gun Time 1:49:26 hours. Chip Time 1:49:17 hours
21
It's done! Finally made it!
22
I'm watching my average page 5'05 ′′ in a half-marathon for amateur runners like us. It's shocking speed. I know from today's run that I still need to train more patience, train fast. Up but today's work is enough to slap your shoulder and tell it ′′ you did a good job ′′
23
While I was riding home, I kept asking myself ′′ Do you think that I'm crazy for ten base numbers Why do I have to run for less than 1:50 hours? As well, I continue to ask myself that the next goal is under 1:45 hours. Is it already? 1:50 hours. With 1:49 hours. Is it so different?
24
I answered myself a minute for a long run. It's a ′′ not easy ′′ time to get rid of it. Every minute is valuable. Just stop drinking water once. Time can move twenty seconds. Every minute it's caused by practice running faster. How to drink water fast. How to eat gel? It's easy to get one minute. It takes months.
25
That's why ′′ one minute ′′ in the field runs precious and intense. That's why runners know it's ′′ one minute ′′ that's why they're ′′ one minute ′′ that's like a diamond.
26
We try to get rid of this ′′ one minute ′′ to see the ′′ best us ′′ or Personal Best (PB) asking who we compete with -- No, but we want to find and see. It's more beautiful to yourself.
27
I'm so glad that I run faster today than before. ′′ One minute If you ask me ′′ what do I do I can't answer what I want to do, but I only know that one minute I drop will lead to another minute. Dropping further, this all leads to nothing but a good feeling to discover the hidden potential in us, which we never know where the limit is.
28
It's not just about running in life and work. Sometimes we are better at anything. It takes time to practice, dream, purify through a lot of experiences. But when we are a little better, we will feel good about ourselves and want to be good at it. Up ′′ a little bit more one minute at a time no difference.
29
Little by little moves. Sometimes people can't see and don't focus on it. But for that person, you know that she or he is moving toward the ′′ best self ′′ and that's why I like personal best or good personal record. The best.
30
A little bit of success always leads to more success. But more importantly, success is a great result from training. It's like a nurturing machine. Our efforts, discipline, diligence, blossoms into self-esteem. We always feel ′′ worthwhile and I want to practice. The most important thing is that it makes me want to wake up and do what I like and believe. When life is like this, it's a powerful and empty life.
This is the power of ′′ one minute ′′
′′ One minute ′′ that answers us that there is still a better us hidden.
Just had to pull that person out
Continuous commitment, discipline, enjoy what you do. Appreciate the progress, no matter how important it is - no need to compare to anyone. Head down, do it for Personal Best.
The result of hard work smells good like flowers :)

Apple CEO tells college graduates: ‘We’ve failed you’
∎ Life will always find lots of ways to tell you no, that you can't, that you shouldn't, that you'd be better off if you didn't try. But New Orleans teaches us there is nothing more beautiful or more worthwhile than trying.
人生總會用很多方式告訴你,這個不可以、那個做不到、你不應該這麼做,或是你最好連試都別試。但紐奧良教導我們,沒什麼比嘗試更美妙,更有價值。
∎ For me, it was that search for greater purpose that brought me to Apple in the first place. I had a comfortable job at a company called Compaq that at the time looked like it was going to be on top forever.
對我來說,當初就是為了尋找更大的目的,才讓我來到蘋果。我原本在康柏的工作很舒服,而且那時康柏看來將永遠處於顛峰。
∎ As it turns out, most of you are probably too young to even remember its name. But in 1998, Steve Jobs convinced me to leave Compaq behind to join a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy.
你們大多數人可能都太年輕,不記得康柏的名字,但在1998年,賈伯斯說服了我離開康柏,加入一家處於破產邊緣的公司。
∎ They made computers, but at that moment at least, people weren't interested in buying them. Steve had a plan to change things. And I wanted to be a part of it.
他們生產電腦,但至少那時大家沒什麼興趣買電腦。賈伯斯想要改變這個局面,而我想參與其中。
∎ It wasn't just about the iMac, or the iPod, or everything that came after. It was about the values that brought these inventions to life.
這不只攸關iMac或iPod,或之後問世的所有東西,而是關於把這些創新真正做出來的價值。
∎ The idea that putting powerful tools in the hands of everyday people helps unleash creativity and move humanity forward. That we can build things that help us imagine a better world and then make it real.
這個想法是將強大工具放到一般人的手中,釋放出創造力,推動人類前進;也就是我們可以打造的東西,能讓我們想像出更美好的世界,再實現這個夢想。
∎ Try something. You may succeed. You may fail. But make it your life's work to remake the world because there is nothing more beautiful or more worthwhile than working to leave something better for humanity.
去多多嘗試,你可能成功,也可能失敗,但要把改造世界變成你的人生目標,努力留下任何東西讓人類更好,沒有什麼比這麼做更美妙、更值得。
以下是演講內容全文:
Hello Tulane! Thank you, President Fitts, Provost Forman, distinguished ( ) faculty ( ), other faculty [laughs], and the entire Tulane family, including the workers, ushers ( ), [and] volunteers who prepared this beautiful space. And I feel duty-bound ( ) to also recognize the hard-working bartenders at The Boot. Though they’re not here with us this morning, I’m sure some of you are reflecting on their contributions as well. [The Boot is a popular college bar right next to Tulane’s campus which has been around for decades.]
And just as many of you have New Orleans in your veins ( ), and perhaps your livers, some of us at Apple have New Orleans in our blood as well. When I was a student at Auburn, the Big Easy was our favorite getaway ( ). It’s amazing how quickly those 363 miles fly by when you’re driving toward a weekend of beignets and beer. And how slowly they go in the opposite direction. Apple’s own Lisa Jackson is a proud Tulane alum ( ). Yes. She brought the Green Wave all the way to Cupertino where she heads our environment and public policy work. We’re thrilled to have her talent and leadership on our team.
OK, enough about us. Let’s talk about you. At moments like this, it always humbles me to watch a community come together to teach, mentor ( ), advise, and finally say with one voice, congratulations to the class of 2019!
Now there’s another very important group: your family and friends. The people who, more than anyone else, loved, supported, and even sacrificed ( ) greatly to help you reach this moment. Let’s give them a round of applause ( ). This will be my first piece of advice. You might not appreciate until much later in your life how much this moment means to them. Or how that bond of obligation ( ), love, and duty between you matters more than anything else.
In fact, that’s what I really want to talk to you about today. In a world where we obsessively ( ) document our own lives, most of us don’t pay nearly enough attention to what we owe one another. Now, this isn’t just about calling your parents more, although I’m sure they’d be grateful if you did that. It’s about recognizing that human civilization began when we realized that we could do more together. That the threats and danger outside the flickering firelight got smaller when we got bigger. And that we could create more — more prosperity ( ), more beauty, more wisdom, and a better life — when we acknowledge certain shared truths and acted collectively.
Maybe I’m biased ( ), but I’ve always thought the South, and the Gulf Coast in particular ( ), have hung on to ( ) this wisdom better than most. [Tim Cook grew up in Robertsdale, Alabama, which is about an hour from New Orleans and is similarly close to the Gulf of Mexico.] In this part of the country, your neighbors check up on you if they haven’t heard from you in a while. Good news travels fast because your victories are their victories too. And you can’t make it through someone’s front door before they offer you a home-cooked meal.
Maybe you haven’t thought about it very much, but these values have informed your Tulane education too. Just look at the motto ( ): not for one’s self, but for one’s own. You’ve been fortunate to live, learn, and grow in a city where human currents blend into ( ) something magical and unexpected. Where unmatched beauty, natural beauty, literary beauty, musical beauty, cultural beauty, seem to spring ( ) unexpectedly from the bayou. The people of New Orleans use two tools to build this city: the unlikely and the impossible. Wherever you go, don’t forget the lessons of this place. Life will always find lots of ways to tell you no, that you can’t, that you shouldn’t, that you’d be better off if you didn’t try. But New Orleans teaches us there is nothing more beautiful or more worthwhile than trying. Especially when we do it not in the service of one’s self, but one’s own.
For me, it was that search for greater purpose that brought me to Apple in the first place. I had a comfortable job at a company called Compaq that at the time looked like it was going to be on top forever. As it turns out, most of you are probably too young to even remember its name. But in 1998, Steve Jobs convinced me to leave Compaq behind to join a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy. They made computers, but at that moment at least, people weren’t interested in buying them. Steve had a plan to change things. And I wanted to be a part of it.
It wasn’t just about the iMac, or the iPod, or everything that came after. It was about the values that brought these inventions to life. The idea that putting powerful tools in the hands of everyday people helps unleash creativity and move humanity forward. That we can build things that help us imagine a better world and then make it real.
There’s a saying that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. At Apple, I learned that’s a total crock ( ). You’ll work harder than you ever thought possible, but the tools will feel light in your hands. As you go out into the world, don’t waste time on problems that have been solved. Don’t get hung up on what other people say is practical. Instead, steer ( ) your ship into the choppy ( ) seas. Look for the rough spots, the problems that seem too big, the complexities ( ) that other people are content to work around. It’s in those places that you will find your purpose. It’s there that you can make your greatest contribution. Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake of being too cautious. Don’t assume that by staying put, the ground won’t move beneath your feet. The status quo ( ) simply won’t last. So get to work on building something better.
In some important ways, my generation has failed you in this regard ( ). We spent too much time debating. We’ve been too focused on the fight and not focused enough on progress. And you don’t need to look far to find an example of that failure. Here today, in this very place, in an arena where thousands once found desperate shelter ( ) from a 100-year disaster, the kind that seem to be happening more and more frequently, I don’t think we can talk about who we are as people and what we owe to one another without talking about climate change.
[applause] Thank you. Thank you.
This problem doesn’t get any easier based on whose side wins or loses an election. It’s about who has won life’s lottery and has the luxury of ignoring this issue and who stands to lose everything. The coastal communities, including some right here in Louisiana, that are already making plans to leave behind the places they’ve called home for generations and head for higher ground. The fishermen whose nets come up empty. The wildlife preserves ( ) with less wildlife to preserve. The marginalized ( ), for whom a natural disaster can mean enduring poverty.
Just ask Tulane’s own Molly Keogh, who’s getting her Ph.D. this weekend. Her important new research shows that rising sea levels are devastating ( ) areas of Southern Louisiana more dramatically than anyone expected. Tulane graduates, these are people’s homes. Their livelihoods ( ). The land where their grandparents were born, lived, and died.
When we talk about climate change or any issue with human costs, and there are many, I challenge you to look for those who have the most to lose and find the real, true empathy ( ) that comes from something shared. That is really what we owe one another. When you do that, the political noise dies down, and you can feel your feet firmly planted on solid ground. After all, we don’t build monuments ( ) to trolls ( ), and we’re not going to start now.
If you find yourself spending more time fighting than getting to work, stop and ask yourself who benefits from all the chaos. There are some who would like you to believe that the only way that you can be strong is by bulldozing ( ) those who disagree or never giving them a chance to say their peace in the first place. That the only way you can build your own accomplishments is by tearing down ( ) the other side.
We forget sometimes that our preexisting beliefs have their own force of gravity ( ). Today, certain algorithms ( ) pull toward you the things you already know, believe, or like, and they push away everything else. Push back. It shouldn’t be this way. But in 2019, opening your eyes and seeing things in a new way can be a revolutionary act. Summon the courage not just to hear but to listen. Not just to act, but to act together.
It can sometimes feel like the odds ( ) are stacked ( ) against you, that it isn’t worth it, that the critics are too persistent and the problems are too great. But the solutions to our problems begin on a human scale with building a shared understanding of the work ahead and with undertaking it together. At the very least, we owe it to each other to try.
It’s worked before. In 1932, the American economy was in a free-fall ( ). Twelve million people were unemployed, and conventional ( ) wisdom said the only thing to do was to ride it out, wait, and hope that things would turn around ( ). But the governor ( ) of New York, a rising star named Franklin Roosevelt, refused to wait. He challenged the status quo and called for action ( ). He needed people to stop their rosy ( ) thinking, face the facts, pull together ( ), and help themselves out of a jam. He said: “The country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it and try another. But above all, try something.”
This was a speech to college students fearful ( ) about their future in an uncertain world. He said: “Yours is not the task of making your way in the world, but the task of remaking the world.” The audacious ( ) empathy of young people, the spirit that says we should live not just for ourselves, but for our own. That’s the way forward. From climate change to immigration, from criminal justice reform to economic opportunity, be motivated by your duty to build a better world. Young people have changed the course of history time and time again. And now it’s time to change it once more.
I know, I know the urgency of that truth is with you today. Feel big because no one can make you feel strong. Feel brave because the challenges we face are great but you are greater. And feel grateful because someone sacrificed to make this moment possible for you. You have clear eyes and a long life to use them. And here in this stadium, I can feel your courage.
Call upon your grit ( ). Try something. You may succeed. You may fail. But make it your life’s work to remake the world because there is nothing more beautiful or more worthwhile than working to leave something better for humanity.
Thank you very much, and congratulations class of 2019!

longtailbutterfly, an NSF serving in SCDF, shares a day in his life on Reddit. Thank you for your service.

"Let's tell a story.
I'm working my 24 hr (work 24 hours, off 48 hours) duty. It's 1100 and I just finished morning lecture (equipment drill and familiarisation) in the engine bay of my fire station. It's a Saturday so our rota (platoon-ish) orders nasi lemak. Coding comes in over the loudspeaker and we turn out to a case of locked door, suspected DOA (decomposing body). Traffic doesn't give way to our LF (red rhino), as per usual (smh). We arrive at the HDB unit and instantly we smell the dead body. The knowledge of smell will come with experience. The niece, who called 995, asks me if her uncle will be ok. I already know the body is decomposing but I reply "We're unsure, but we'll try our best". I lie to her face. My pump operator (PO, and the only regular in the crew) looks at me and grimaces. We've been in this situation together many times before. We easily break the door and the smell intensifies. I go in first, followed by the ambulance (alpha) paramedic. We find the body on the bed in the master bedroom. The paramedic tells me, "About two weeks". The body is severely bloated, skin green and black. The face is unrecognizable as it has bloated too much. Bile attempts to escape from between the discolored lips creating bubbles. The smell is sweet but rotten and my fireman gags. I get the relevant information I need and step out for a breather. The niece looks at me and asks what is going on. I look at her and I know she knows he's dead. "You uncle... has passed away". I turn away to avoid the emotions. Emotions are killers in this line of work.
We get back in time for nasi lemak lunch. The chicken is a bit soggy this week. The smell of rotten flesh lingers in my nostrils. I watch the Malay romantic drama that my enciks chose on the TV. It's ok, the girl is cute.
Before dinner we get another call - unit fire confirm case. We race there and reach before the fire engine (pumper). They're caught in traffic and will take another few minutes. Two firefighters and I proceed to the unit. Instantly the thick black smoke chokes my throat and waters my eyes. I struggle with my breathing cylinder because the air hose delivery tool is stuck between my backplate and my back. I say fuck it, neighbours are already screaming for us to hurry. The pressure escalates but I close myself off from the members of public, just like normal. We all focus. The only things I listen to are my matra (radio) and my fireman. I just wear my facemask for minimal protection and crawl in. The fire is well alight on the stove and I shoot at it. The smoke limits my visibility to 0, I now can't see my fingers as I stretch out my arm. I crawl back out and get stuck on a fallen wire. I panic as I think of my family. Emotions are dangerous. A fire biker crawls in and frees me. We step out and I tell the crew the fire is almost finished but our CAF backpacks are finished (water foam sprayers). I send the firefighters down to set up water supply from hydrant and crawl back in with the firebiker. The smoke makes it feel like someone just threw hot ash down my throat. We extinguish the fire using an ass-washing hose from the kitchen toilet. I am coughing badly but he sprays my face with the hose. The kitchen is badly burnt. I can feel the smoke damage in my lungs. The owner and neighbours pat me on the back and thank me for saving their home as I walk out. I smile but I know I took another step closer to death.
We get back at 2200 and order McDonalds. It is the best Double McSpicy I’ve eaten in a while.
At lunch the next day my friend (SAF LTA) tells me how stressful being an instructor at SAFTI has been recently. I remember as my cylinder got trapped on the fallen wire, and how I thought of my family in those few struggling seconds. I nod my head and grunt. " SAF has it tough with JCC and everything huh?" I joke. He agrees enthusiastically.
All in a day’s work for the NSFs in SPF/SCDF. If we fail, someone dies from our direct actions. Welcome to NS. No second chances or semula. Just death. I wish the public knew the risks that some NSFs take each day. We might not be as fit as NDU or as garang as commandos, but we put our lives on the line literally every day.
As an NSF I can say I have saved many lives, fought many fires and contributed to Singapore. No play acting or training for a war that will never happen (though I understand the incredible need for an armed military). I love my job, I love NS and wouldn't trade it for anything else (maybe an EMT vocation).
I am still amazed that many members of public still associate NS with army. I wish people would know. There's no greater feeling in this world than knowing some uncle I helped rescue on my first duty at 0200 will live to eat his favourite mee pok or talk cock with his kakis because of my direct actions. Pride and care right?
At least I get paid $1400 a month (;
UPDATE: Thanks for overwhelming suppourt. If I knew how big this would get I would have proofread my writing more 😒 (some might say it spread like fire in dry grass during lalang season). I would tell more stories but I know that it would compromise my anonymity so I'll just shut my mouth, and unfortunately since this is a throw away you guys probably won't be hearing from me again.
What were my goals for this post?
To bring awareness to the nature and extent of NSF work in SCDF.
To just get some words off my chest.
This post was NOT meant to:
Bash SAF. I know the importance of a trained military (I believe I addressed this point in my initial post). If we didn't have the National Service Scheme, invading Singapore as Indonesia or Malaysia would be easy af.
Over-dramatise our work. I tried my hardest to write from a neutral stand point and deliver facts about incidents as cold, hard, and true as the Ben&Jerrys ice cream in my freezer however what we do on a daily sometimes makes me ask "Am I in a Michael Bay film?". It happens to the best of us.
If you were offended, I apologise. My intentions were merely to raise awareness for the often overlooked and under-praised "little brother" NSFs in SCDF/SPF. So many of our kind deserve recognition for what they deal with.
One last short bit before signing off.
EMTs (medical assistants in ambulances) have some of the roughest calls out there, no contest. I was having dinner with my buddy from BRT who later became an EMT at a high volume station when he dropped Fat Man 2.0 on me. Traditionally he and I have always been tuned to similar wavelengths as the chaos-utopia nature of our jobs is only shared between a select few.
He's an NSF like me -- 18-22, male, horny. As per the norm we were sharing gossip about events or big incidents in the Force, latest happenings and where that one cute paramedic at 33 is now. We were just digging in to our chow when he told me "I had a casualty die in my hands for the first time".
According to him it's not common for that to happen. I nod my head as I spool my pasta. It's has a thick green sauce and I can't help but think of my last DOA. I throw the idea out of my mind. Work is work, recreation is recreation. Usually when EMS arrives the casualty has a high chance of surviving, albeit sometimes with long lasting or even permanent injuries, or the casualty is dead. "Case of fall from height. The skull was completely smashed," he told me between mouthfuls of food, "I had the guy in a head grip but the harder I held his skull, the more my fingers just... pressed into his brain. There was no structural integrity left in the skull." We continued eating, he had told me of a similar case before. It wasn't new news to either of us. The pasta burns my tongue and I sip on my lemon tea. Too sweet. "Then he just stopped breathing. CPR AED didn't work." It was the first time witnessing the transition from alive to dead. They couldn't resuscitate. We paid the bill and started chitchatting about soccer on the way to the MRT. It was one of eight calls on his 8 hour duty. The food place was way too expensive and I made a mental note to never go back (unless I'm with my parents). Who charges $5 for ice lemon tea? Christ.
There are many duties where I don't get a call the whole 24 hours. If it's a busy day we'll get 3-4. 3-4 for him is a light day. Alpha (ambulance) guys really get it the hardest.
If you know someone who has a similar job, just listen to what they have to say. It's not easy for everyone to transition from seeing a broken family outside a unit containing a dead body to eating breakfast with their fam at their favourite prata house while being all happy smiley. We all get desensitised to death and risking everything but desensitisation doesn't mean it doesn't take a mental toll on our minds and well-being. We don't admit it because it's not garang, but everyone needs to get their thoughts off their chest every once in a while. You can help them by lending a ear (or a hug)."

[Verse 1]
Dough-Boy: I been down I been down I been down down
When I needed you the most you wasn’t round round
Now I’m hot now I’m flexed up in this town town
Fuck a blue face my paper brown brown
Hate on me hate on me bitch you dumb as fuck
Duffle bag full of stacks watch me run it up
Cash money only thing that made me fall in love
Made a mil realize that shit not enough
Back when I was broke huh, didn’t have money and shit
Thought I was a joke huh, thought I was funny and shit
Hundred K for a beat, made two of those in a week
Investing investing investing, might buy a house up at the peak
I stay quiet but my music turn up loud loud
You want smoke, I’ma hit you with the pow pow
Lost my soul to the game it can’t be found found
I been down I been down I been down down
[Chorus]
Hanjin 陳奐仁: I been down I been down I been down down
So down I been down I been down down
When I smile it’s a frown upside down down
I been down I been down I been down down
I wanna cry like a waterfall
I wanna die like who gives a fuck
Don’t ask me why you don’t even know
I been down I been down I been down down
[Verse 2]
Hanjin 陳奐仁: It gets harder and harder each day to wake up
My prayers they say don’t make up
For sins that were never paid up
The national debt will catch up
The bubble created blows up
Your dreams turn into ketchup
My medication just ran out
My body’s about to give out
poison so toxic burnin my eyes out
Personal crisis don’t get bail outs
expendable folk crying about
How they can barely feed a family of four
Welfare just gets me enough to cover my habit it’s expensive
Optimism is a luxury I can barely afford
Ask for deliverance and they gave me a noose, oh lord
I can’t imagine what you suffered my other cheek is swollen
Happiness was a one-take I forgot to press record
[Bridge]
Dough-Boy: I can’t feel my face
Since you walked away
I’m stuck here in this maze
I don’t wanna wait
Hanjin 陳奐仁: I can’t feel my face
Since you walked away
Feels like end of days
Take me from this place

"Bishop Briggs - River" Lyrics:
Like a river, like a river, sh-
Like a river, like a river, sh-
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
How do we fall in love
Harder than a bullet could hit ya?
How do we fall apart
Faster than a hair pin trigger?
Don't you say, don't you say it
Don't say, don't you say it
One breath, it'll just break it
So shut your mouth and run me like a river
Shut your mouth, baby stand and deliver
Holy hands, oh they make me a sinner
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Choke this love till the veins start to shiver
One last breath till the tears start to wither
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Tales of an endless heart
Curses is the fool who's willing
Can't change the way we are
One kiss away from killing
Don't you say, don't you say it
Don't say, don't you say it
One breath it'll just break it
So shut your mouth and run me like a river
Shut your mouth, baby stand and deliver
Holy hands, ooh they make me a sinner
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Choke this love till the veins start to shiver
One last breath till the tears start to wither
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Like a river, like a river, (oh oh oh)
Like a river, like a river, (ooh-oh-oh)
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Hey, oh oh oh
Hey, oh oh oh (like a river)
Hey, oh oh oh
Oh oh oh (like a river)
Like a river
Shut your mouth baby stand and deliver (stand and deliver)(like a river, like a river)
Holy hands, oh they make me a sinner (make me a sinner)(like a river, like a river)
Like a river, like a river (like a river)
Shut your mouth and run me like a river (and run me like a river)
Choke this love till the veins start to shiver (start to shiver)(like a river, like a river)
One last breath till the tears start to wither (oh oh)
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river

"War Paint" Official Music Video
https://youtu.be/-o1cJWhb_Vk
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
(Bang!)
I can hear the shots, when the fireworks soar,
and the sounds of the battle
(Drop down!)
Drop down, know I'm on top, when the arrows are drawn,
the sergeant's on the saddle
This ain't the type of love that sees a lot of give and take
And I don't know how we push and pull,
but I know we'll never break
Bang, bang, I can hear the shots
But I like the way you feel in the flames of the candle
[Pre-Chorus]
Too late to leave these walls
This castle's been surrounded
Won't stay to watch it fall around us
[Chorus]
Bring the big guns out, shoot now
I'll make the drums beat harder for you
Red on the ground, bleed out
I'll rub the colors on my face to prove
I'll sing it like
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
[Verse 2]
I move my troops on the map
When your allies and your tribes are telling you to leave me
They won't see my plan of attack
Cause this is our fight; love is not the enemy
Everything that you do gives me some power, makes me feel alive
So take the gun, I'm your Bonnie, you can be my Clyde
I know that you feel the same
So paint it on your face and, baby, let the world see
[Pre-Chorus]
Too late to leave these walls
This castle's been surrounded
Won't stay to watch it fall around us
[Chorus]
Bring the big guns out, shoot now
I'll make the drums beat harder for you
Red on the ground, bleed out
I'll rub the colors on my face to prove
I'll sing it like
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
[Bridge]
It's not easy, but I'll draw my knife for you
It's not easy, but I'll draw my knife for you again
[Chorus]
Bring the big guns out, shoot now
I'll make the drums beat harder for you
Red on the ground, bleed out
I'll rub the colors on my face to prove
I'll sing it like
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Watch me put my war paint on, my war paint on
On for you
