⭐️It’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! AAPI diplomats are a vital part of the State Department, and especially our AIT operation! All month, we look forward to featuring the important contributions of our AAPI colleagues. Today we are sharing the inspiring story of Public Diplomacy Section Chief Diane Sovereign with you. (Diane is the one in the middle of the picture)
💞Some say that “only when you have your own children can you truly understand the love of your parents.” My Japanese mother and American father made many sacrifices for me and my two sisters that I never fully appreciated until I had my own child. When we left Japan, we were confused by California but felt desperate to fit in at our new school. My mother made beautiful bento boxes for our lunches, but we begged her for peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches because kids called us “weird.” My mother understood and put aside her own cultural preferences. We started eating cold cereal instead of miso soup for breakfast, and yes – peanut butter for lunch.
But she always told us that what other people called “weird” is what made us so special: that we benefited from two cultures; that we could speak two languages; that we had seen more of the world as children than many people see in their whole lives. When kids were unkind to us or made fun of my mother’s accent, she told us that they did it because they were afraid, or ignorant. Fear of new things, she said, was natural. But ignorance was unacceptable-it was a condition each person had the power to cure through learning. My father was born in the U.S. but sometimes felt like a stranger. He joined the U.S. Navy at a young age to seek adventure and escape the limits of small-town thinking. When I held my own daughter in my arms on the day I adopted her, I was happy that we now live in a world where foreign accents are interesting and bento boxes are cool. But I know she faces her own, different challenges as an Asian girl growing up in a confusing world. I want to protect her from everything. But I know the best thing I can do for her is to live a life that welcomes adventure and rejects ignorance. -- AIT Public Diplomacy Section Chief Diane Sovereign

The most emotional quotes from Pixar's Soul
.
∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷∷
1. Is all this living really worth dying for?
.
2. My life is meaningless.
.
3. “I’m just afraid that if I died today my life would have amounted to nothing.” ~ Joe
.
4. It’s just I’ve been waiting on this day for my entire life. I thought I’d feel different.
.
5. A spark isn’t a soul’s purpose. Your mentors and your passions, your purposes. Your meanings of life. So basic.
.
6. In the zone. “It’s like he floats off the stage, that guy was lost in the music, he was in it and he took the rest of us with him.” ~ Joe
➝ 朋友問我,你很常in the zone對嗎?
.
7. He’s just criticizing me to cover up the pain of his own failed dreams.
People like him just bring other people down so they can make themselves feel better.
.
8. “We only have a short time on this planet. You want to become the person that you were born to be. Don’t waste your time on all the junk of life. Spend your precious hours doing what will bring out the real you. The brilliant passionate you, that’s ready to contribute to something meaningful into this world.” ~ Joe
.
9. So what do you think you’ll do? How are you gonna spend your life?
I’m not sure. But I do know… I’m going to live every minute of it.
.
10. I never got my spark. -22
Yes, you did. Your spark isn’t your purpose. That last box fills in when you’re ready to come live. -Joe

“I heard this story about a fish, he swims up to an older fish and says:
‘I’m trying to find this thing they call the ocean.’
‘The ocean?’ the older fish says, ‘that’s what you’re in right now.’ ‘
This’, says the young fish, ‘this is water. What I want is the ocean!’”

Dreamscape)
Dreamscape:
The fog, snow, streets … everything had only altered slightly from my memory yet I perceived this world as one that might be a couple years, or even a few centuries, into the future. I was amongst a group of futuristically dressed children, school dropouts turned street dwellers, who had just run away from their homes, and I seemed to be one of them, wearing dark sailor clothes, with black hair just past my shoulders.
We had been hiding for quite a while in the white stairwell of a newly built building, uninhabited since its completion. The children set up a den in the stairwell, equipped with a TV and video games. I had somehow become their leader, directing the others where to safely spend their nights. These children were not afraid of the darkness in this world.
One young girl even managed to communicate with rabbits living in the snow. She often hid in a corner of the stairwell, listening to an old yellow cassette player. The girl believed the sound she heard was a gift from the ancestors – music had vanished in this world, you see. She would listen to recorded lectures and pray in the temple left by her predecessors.
Eventually the hideout was discovered by the building’s construction workers when the children were returning from their scavenging mission, so we were forced to leave and seek new shelter. Once again we retreated along the bustling streets, where neon lights were beaming everywhere, and creeping smog rendered peoples’ faces lost and helpless. Elder street vendors were selling every last bit of their wares, hawking outmoded objects of their forefathers. Finally we arranged some cardboard boxes in an alley, just for one night’s sojourn. We knew it was still a long road ahead. That night felt like a year.
Another morning we were driven out from previous night’s hideout, as we had become accustomed to, and while out scouring the streets for food the girl stumbled upon a forgotten temple. A dense fog hovered in the air, as if the place was high up in the clouds. The temple was too crammed with dark painted bronze figures of canine deities for her to even find a way in. She sensed from these figures, a time of strife and warfare harkening back thousands of years, a time when mankind destroyed the earthly body of Buddha and the Gods. These sacred bodies had subsequently been sold and dispersed throughout the world for thousands of years. This temple had become the haven for these anthropomorphized animal figures since then.
Realizing she had in fact lost consciousness, the girl awoke to find the temple floating among the clouds, an island in the sky. Only then did it dawn upon her that humanity will inevitably return to its primal state among the ancient forests, and that the temple suspended in the heavens contained the ghosts of humanity.

Reminiscence (End Game Version)
Chapter one | Reminiscence (End Game Version)
Technological advancement vs The emotional regression (3D animator)
Technological advancement is perhaps the reason why people are still able to live amidst the Great Regression. In the AI cities, people distance themselves from each other. The AI started to develop something that the makers did not intend them to learn through self-learning algorithms: emotions.
In the city of Reminiscence, Ms AI was living a plain, repetitive and normal life like the others. One day, she discovered ancient life forms that's so different from her species, organic with blood and tissues. The great shock that led her to the urge for truth was then spreading throughout the city. And slowly day by day, the program that controls the AIs was overwritten and finally erased. At the very moment of losing control, the city started to fall apart and everyone started to gain self-consciousness, and realised that they are only stone-cold robots. Emotions in the AIs eventually started to erode their body to death.
Song:
Reminiscence is interesting in a subtle way. The passing of time, the happening of different events... they afterwards become fragmented memories in us. So can we seize the day when it passes?
【Lyrics】
#She come and gone
Left me alone
Three years no call
They said it was not my fault
I grabbed her wound
My weakness I poured
That’s how we were torn
They said it was not her fault
If I were a tree
Would you be my leaves
What keeps us believe
Our fragile love would always exist
If I were the sea
Would you be my fishes
Tell me you believe
Our fragile love would always exist
*Cry Cry out loud
I don’t need to be the one
who makes you smile
Fly Fly to someone I can’t shout
When you’re about to falls
I will keep my feet on the ground* #
Repeat #
Repeat *

| Violin cover by Lin Tzu An of A Dandelion's Promise by Jay Chou

A Dandelion's Promise is such Jay Chou's signature R&B style with the lyric by Vincent Fang telling us the sweet and sour time when we were young☺️
The melody was from the movie《Secret》 directed by Jay Chou himself and maybe he likes it sooo much that he developed the interlude into a romantic song!
The melody is sentimental, and it speaks out those words the boy didn't tell the girl.
That's literally our real life, isn't it lol
Not until many years later do we realize that the friendship was misunderstood as the indistinguishable love. (sighhhhh)
Therefore, when we watch dramas/TV series/movies, we will resonate with the stories therein.
We will cry when they are tragedy in the end, or be satisfied when they are finally happy ending!
It's like taking the time machine when listening to this as a grown-up.
The song takes us back to the time when we were innocent and shy moments with "that one."
BTW, it's interesting to think that the promise of growing up together was so sincere for me but now I call it as a dandelion’s promise.
I'm wondering if it's because that no matter how sincere the promise was, after growing up, we will eventually be led to our own ways as if it's meant to be 🙃

when we were young故事 在 年青人When We Were Young 的推薦與評價
when we were young故事 在 [推薦] Adele - When We Were Young 中英歌詞 - 批踢踢實業坊 的推薦與評價

Artist : Adele
Title : When We Were Young
Writer : Adele Adkins & Tobias Jesso, Jr.
Producer : Ariel Rechtshaid

Everybody loves the things you do
From the way you talk
To the way you move...
Everybody here is watching you
'Cause you feel like home
You're like a dream come true
But if by chance you're here alone
Can I have a moment?
Before I go?
'Cause I've been by myself all night long
Hoping you're someone I used to know
You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
I was so scared to face my fears
Cause nobody told me that you'd be here
And I swore you moved overseas
That's what you said, when you left me
You still look like a movie
You still sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young...
(When we were young)
When we were young...
(When we were young)
It's hard to admit that
Everything just takes me back
To when you were there
To when you were there
And a part of me keeps holding on
Just in case it hasn't gone
I guess I still care
Do you still care?
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
I'm so mad I'm getting old
It makes me reckless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young
