Separation of church and state is only a fantasy really. I think the reality is something much more complicated. Written by a friend.
This article, “Surviving an Era of Post-Integrity," the fourteenth in the series, "Looking for the right, the good, and the happy" is a response by Henry Green to a question.
----------------------------
From your pastoral and professional experience, what are some guidelines, suggestions, for lay people and pastors you can give us to deal with the misinformation, scandals, and hyperbole that have become a part of so many congregations?"
------------------------------
For over 35-years I served as senior pastor to five white Baptist congregations. After serving my last church for over 15 years, I left pastoral ministry in 2014. The election of 2016 was an affirmation of that decision to leave as the returns revealed how 80+% of white Baptist/Evangelicals voted for the antithesis of their belief claims. The pull of fear-based tribalism in 2016 propelled these churches into an era of post-integrity.
In July 2017, while visiting relatives in Florida, I attended a Presbyterian, USA congregation. I enjoyed the hymns and was feeling good about the sermon. Then, out of context, the pastor used a quote from the new president (45) and it seemed clear he was pandering to certain members in the church.
In a congregation where you might expect the pastor to have the good sense to understand the ethical dissonance of offering a quote from this president, one whose entire life has been a thematic movement of one big lie to the next, it was all I could do to keep from standing up, calling him out, and walking away. Family restraints held me in my seat.
This experience reminded me of my own pastoral experience and some criticisms I received from conservatively political members that I was “too political.” However, for these same people, had I used memos from Fox or the RNC they would not have considered that “political.”
The truth is, we all became politicians from the moment we were born. We cried to be fed, changed, and hugged. This continues throughout life with ever increasing levels of complexity. Everything is political and those who negatively use the term to diminish another only reveal their own bias. As a pastor, I respected separation of church and state, followed the lectionary lessons, and used a hermeneutic centered in the teachings of Jesus.
Churches interested in surviving in an era of post integrity would be wise to develop strategies distancing themselves from the false god of civil religion and personality cults. Here are my thoughts about surviving. First, there is no substitute for kindness. You are not required to pander to bullies or be controlled by their nonsense, just be kind in a firm way. Second, have enough humility to be empathetic. Some may be ignorant and simply need empathy to open the door to additional information. Which leads me to the Third thought, you must be truthful. If all truth is God’s truth, telling the truth represents an ethic of love.
Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said, “You are entitled to believe anything you want to believe, but you are not entitled to your own set of facts.” Separating the subjective from the empirical is necessary to break the polarizing impact of threats of economic abandonment. Finally, pastors must be willing to risk their jobs for the integrity of the community they serve and for themselves. Integrity is the only real commodity we possess.

【玳瑚師父隨筆錄】 《向日》
Looking Towards the Sun (English version below)

Swimming is a sport I enjoy thoroughly, and I could do it up to three times a week. Every time before I set off for the pool, I would look out of the window and see if it is a sunny or a breezy day. If it was not that kind of weather, I would usually banish any thought of swimming that day and would wait out for another day or two. I love to see Mr Sunshine, as He always gives people brilliance, excitement, hope, joy and all the positive energies.
Many people assume that the flowers are at their most brilliant in Spring time. In fact, Spring is when the flowers blossom, but Summer is when they compete to be the most radiant of them all. The same goes for fruits. As long as there is sufficient sunlight, the fruits harvested would be especially sweet! Do not forget that durian, the king of fruits, as well as mangosteen, the queen of fruits, are both grown in the tropics. I am dancing in delight as we are talking about fruits and flowers!
It is not just the plants and trees, vegetables and fruits. In fact, human beings and the animals, even all living beings in this world, rely heavily on the energy from the Sun to live on this tumultuous planet. The Sun wields a great and selfless influence, and shines on every one with no bias at all. We, as Buddhists, should learn from the great example set by the Sun. And this is the reason why, all these years, I have been looking up diligently to the Sun, observing and learning from the Sun, and looking forward to the day I attain Enlightenment and be eternally free from the sufferings of reincarnation.
What I meant by "looking towards the Sun" is to be on the Right Path, to make use of all your abilities and selflessly contribute to all of mankind. Observing the Sun is to channel the light of Eternity and Righteousness into our body and merge with it. Learning from the Sun is to emulate its ability to break through and vanquish all darkness, relieving all sentient beings of fear and giving them the serenity and stability they so crave for.
I am going to let everybody in on this: It is definitely a very important ritual to look towards the Sun, observe and learn from it every day because everybody is wishing for the one single shot of effort that can lead them to salvation!

Statement by the Leader of UMNO Youth in response to Lim Guan Eng
As press statements go, Lim Guan Eng’s speedy response to my comments regarding the film “The New Village” speaks volumes to his inherently political and partisan character. For context, I questioned why “The New Village” appears to be given an easier ride by the Film Censorship Board compared to “Tanda Putera” whose screening had been delayed by a year until the new release date of Aug 29. Considering the pain and tragedy attached to the points of history at which both films are situated, it was a question I raised to ensure that the sensitivities of all Malaysians were taken into account, what with the screening of the two films meant to happen in the month of our Independence.
Instead of engaging in the question of what was appropriate and accurate to be screened as history, Lim Guan Eng’s statement belies a deep partisan bias on matters that concern national history, identity and sentiment. This bias comes at great cost to the force of his arguments – he employs a most rudimentary logic to arrive at an indefensible conclusion that Utusan and UMNO Youth are hypocrites. I wish to expose this bias.
Lim Guan Eng’s charge of hypocrisy centers on this most curious of arguments: that if Barisan Nasional makes ties with governments or other political parties with a communist past, then it has no right to complain about films that may glorify our own communist history. He quotes our ties with the likes of China and Cuba as examples – and for effect, he brings up the relationship that BN Youth made with the Communist Youth League of China (CYL).
It doesn’t take very much to know that the situations are incomparable. Our relationships with China, Cuba and Vietnam are diplomatic ties with internationally recognized sovereign governments – relationships borne out of trade, economic and geo-political necessitThat they happen to be ‘communist’ – in the case of China clearly more in name than in nature – does not carry the same significance as the communism Malaysians remember; a communism which this film appears to be glorifying.
But let’s indulge Lim Guan Eng in his lazy analogies for a moment longer. The Communist Party of China has undergone a profound evolution in its character as the world moved away from Cold War sensibilities to 21st century globalisation – in the most important ways, it is unrecognizable from its Marxist-Leninist past to the present day incarnation responsible for turning China into a global superpower. In stark contrast, the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) never went through anything of the sort as far as the Malaysian collective consciousness is concerned. It was not the party of government, it was not responsible for steering this country’s economic progress. Instead, it remains synonymous with a very dark period in our history, conjuring up painful memories for all Malaysians affected by their reign of terror.
But of course these basic comprehensions are lost on Lim Guan Eng. He would sooner suggest we break off ties with China than acknowledge that perhaps more thought should be given to whether there are serious issues surrounding this "The New Village" film.
In fact, isn’t it telling how reactive and sensitive Lim Guan Eng was to my remarks, when what I called for was a review by the censorship board? Even without having seen the film, it wasn’t too difficult to ascertain from the trailer that Communist insurgents were the protagonists painted as national heroes.
Now, unlike Lim Guan Eng, I am receptive to the nuances of history – I understand there can be different readings of historical accounts depending on which period one looks at, and I understand that people and organisations sometimes take up roles with inadvertent outcomes for others.
But one fact is indisputable – that the CPM terrorized and murdered thousands of Malaysians who did not bow to their wishes – many of whom died in gruesome circumstances, disemboweled and dismembered. It is from this sombre point of origin that my discomfort comes.
Lim Guan Eng accused me of stoking "the fire of racism and lies to further divide the nation with walls of hatred and fear" when I never once mentioned race in my initial remarks. And I didn’t for a good reason – because the pain inflicted by the CPM was not felt by one race, but by all Malaysians. And it is a Malaysian – not a Malay or UMNO or Utusan – outrage that occurs when there is any attempt at either historical revisionism or an unfair portrayal of history regarding the CPM
Instead of indulging in political platitudes – accusing his opponents as divisive, deceptive or hypocritical at every turn – I urge Lim Guan Eng to suspend his partisan judgment when it comes to matters that concern our identity and history as a people. That’s what statesmen do. He should try it sometime.
