你知道美國目前最大的新聞是哪樁? 不是疫情, 不是疫苗, 不是拜登, 不是川普, 而是關於一名失聯女子。22 歲女孩 Gabby Petito 和未婚夫開著露營車橫越美國, 飽覽各地風光, 看似浪漫愜意, 卻不時發生爭吵。路人在國家公園看到他們激烈爭執還擔心地報警。一個多禮拜前, 未婚夫獨自駕著她的車回到佛羅里達, 女孩不見蹤影。一件普通的失蹤人口案立刻在網路上發酵, 然後所有新聞媒體開始鋪天蓋地的報導, 不管左派右派媒體還是全國媒體地方媒體, 大家都整天不停瘋狂報導。前天女孩的屍體在懷俄明州被警方發現, 讓很多抱著一線希望的網民心碎。同時間, 未婚夫人間蒸發, 警方馬不停蹄地尋找下落。媒體繼續 24 小時緊追 。

這則新聞讓人不得不想起十幾年前阿拉巴馬少女 Natalee Holloway 的加勒比海畢旅失蹤事件, 新聞媒體也是發了狂似地報導。近年還有不少其他類似的例子。為什麼她們能引起媒體關注? 有一個很明顯的共通點: 年輕貌美的白人女子, 而且多為金髮。

美國每天有數百個失蹤人口案件, 能上全國新聞版面的只有白人女孩。 這樣的現象實在太常發生又太過明顯, 因此出現了 Missing White Woman Syndrome (失蹤白人女子症候群) 這個名詞, 用來突顯媒體的不公。

繼量化寬鬆後，再新現一個名詞，叫量化派A。

FT剛出了一份報道幾有趣，分享下。

如果CPI升5%叫通脹勁的話，睇下英國「派Grade通脹」有幾利害。今年獲派A*及A Grade的比例接近45%，較2019年的25.5%升足廿個百份點。

原因，公開考試取消，變成由老師根據「一籃子」因素決定學生值咩Garde。

調查報道亦發現，私立學校學生獲A及A*比重達七成，公立學校就不足四成。

The decision, which led to a ballooning in top grades, was taken after an outcry in 2020 over a computer-based approach designed to keep results in line with previous years, leading to manifest injustices, particularly in schools in more disadvantaged areas.//

22 歲非裔美籍詩人 Amanda Gorman 上台讀詩
這首詩的選字雖然平易近人
但巧妙運用了每個字詞的雙關和歧義
用寫作的角度來說，可謂語用力驚人

報導給出了這個主標題：
The Hill We Climb: the Amanda Gorman poem that stole the inauguration show

The Hill We Climb 是詩的標題
steal the show 指「搶盡風采」
inauguration 就是「就職典禮」

副標題這麼說：
The 22-year-old poet wowed the crowd with her reading during Joe Biden’s swearing-in

wow the crowd 指「讓群眾驚豔」，wow 當動詞有「讓人說 wow 」的意思
swearing-in 指「宣誓就職」

接著讓我們一起來讀詩的第一節：

When day comes, we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
（當白晝降臨，我們問著自己：在無盡的陰影中如何找到光亮？）
👉 light（光亮）和 shade（陰影）對比
👉 never-ending 永不結束的

The loss we carry, a sea we must wade.
（我們承受著失去，還須度過一片汪洋。）
👉 lose 是動詞，loss 是名詞
👉 wade 指「涉水而過」

We’ve braved the belly of the beast.
（我們抵擋著艱險危殆。）
👉 brave 當動詞用，有「勇敢面對、敢於承受」的意思
👉 belly of the beast 意指「非常危險的境地」

We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace,
（我們知曉沉默不代表和睦）
👉 learn 除了「學習」，還有「知道」的意思

and the norms and notions of what “just” is isn’t always justice.
（「正直」的思維和規範，不一定等同正義）
👉 norms and notions 押頭韻 (alliteration)，吸引讀者注意力
👉 just 可以當 justice 的形容詞，例如：a just/ an unjust man（一個正直/不正直的人）

And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it.
（然而在我們知曉之前，黎明就屬於我們）
Somehow we do it.
（我們終究挺了過來）
👉 somehow 原意為「不知怎地」，常用來形容「非常艱難、不知怎麼辦到」

Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken,
but simply unfinished.
（我們歷盡滄桑，親眼看見一個國家並非殘破，只是尚未完整）
👉 weather 當動詞時指「遭受風雨吹打」、witness 指「目擊」
👉 能想到 weathered and witnessed 兩個 w 的組合，功力非常高強

值得我們攝取學習

｜聖誕食譜 香草烤雞 聖誕唔一定食火雞！｜ Herbs Roasted Chicken
很多人說起聖誕就想到火雞，為食的「Son姐」張慧敏也不例外。不過身處香港如此彈丸之地，並非人人家中都有巨型焗爐，何況多年經驗所得，火雞肉味雖濃，卻總難以「嫩滑」來形容。今次Son姐就為大家帶來一道香草烤雞，香氣四溢之餘肉汁滿瀉，讓大家向身邊人送上冬日幸福滋味，邊個話聖誕一定要食火雞？

這道烤雞製作難度不高，只需按簡單步驟即可順利完成，連盆底蔬菜都只要隨意切件，毋須精準刀法，秘訣只在於雞要肥美新鮮。如何判斷怎樣才算是肥雞？邪惡的肥膏為何會是寶？怎樣才能鎖住肉汁做到皮脆肉嫩，連雞胸都不會「鞋烚烚」？就連香草心水選擇是甚麼，黑白胡椒有何分別，Son姐都統統話你知！

聖誕節幾乎是普天同慶的代名詞，能炮製一頓美味大餐慰勞家人，排排坐共享美食，想想也覺幸福。不過霸氣Son姐都有溫馨提示，要記得食物只是輔助，最重要是和家人、和愛人、和你關心的人一起分享：「嗰份溫暖同感覺，比食物嚟得更重要。」聖誕快樂呀各位！


材料：
肥雞 1隻

盆底配料：
薯仔
洋葱
西芹
番薯
紅蘿蔔
蒜頭
檸檬皮少許

醃雞用材料：
胡椒粒 2茶匙
粗鹽 2茶匙
油 少許
迷迭香
百里香
奧勒岡
香芹

汁料：
檸檬 1個
蜜糖

步驟：
．肥雞切去頭部、雙腳；去掉尾部兩塊肥油，保留雞胸內肥油；去掉內臟雜質，瀝乾水備用。
．準備胡椒、粗鹽，加上迷迭香、百里香、奧勒岡和香芹，拌勻後塗抹肥雞表面和雞隻內部。
注意：預早一天醃製更佳。
．薯仔、洋葱、西芹、番薯、紅蘿蔔隨意切開，不用切太細；蒜頭可剝開。
．全部蔬菜放到焗爐盆上，刨少量檸檬皮加入蔬菜，再將肥雞置於蔬菜上。
．檸檬戳洞，然後塞進雞殼。
．焗爐須預熱至攝氏180度，放進烤雞盆後焗一小時左右。
．將檸橡從雞殼內取出，榨出檸檬汁混和蜜糖，塗上肥雞表面，然後再焗幾分鐘即成。
注意：焗好後宜先將烤雞放涼再切，避免肉汁流失。

Herbs Roasted Chicken

Ingredients:
Fatty whole chicken 1 pc

Ingredients to line roast pan:
Potatoes
Onions
Celery
Sweet potatoes
Carrots
Garlic cloves
Lemon zest Some

Chicken marinade:
Black peppercorn 2 tsp
Coarse salt 2 tsp
Oil Some
Rosemary
Thyme leaves
Oregano
Parsley

Sauce:
Lemon 1 pc
Honey

Steps:
1. Remove head and feet from chicken. Remove the two pieces of fat from tail area. Keep the fat attached to the breast area. Remove all inner organs, clean, drain, and set aside.
2. Combine black peppercorn, coarse salt, oil, rosemary, thyme leaves, oregano, and parsley. Rub the skin and inner cavity of the chicken with the mixture.
Note: Best to let the chicken marinate a day before cooking.
3. Cut potatoes, onions, celery, sweet potatoes, and carrots into pieces, not too small; Garlic cloves peeled.
4. Put all vegetables onto roast pan to line the bottom of pan, add some lemon zest to the vegetables. Place chicken on top of the bed of vegetables.
5. Poke a hole in the lemon and place it in the inner cavity of the chicken.
6. Preheat oven to 180°C, bake chicken for 1 hour.
7. Remove lemon from inner cavity of the chicken, squeeze the lemon juice and mix with honey. Brush mixture on the chicken skin and bake for another few minutes.
Note: After baking, let chicken rest until room temperature before cutting to ensure meat juice does not escape.
